Reinventing Coffee Cup Quality

In a remarkable collaborative effort, Averna, a globally recognized provider of testing and quality solutions, has partnered with Datwyler, a leading manufacturer in aluminum packaging for the food and beverage sector. Together, they have launched a groundbreaking inspection and stacking system designed to transform the production of single-serve coffee capsules.

The surge in demand for single-serve coffee pads has placed Datwyler in a challenging position: they needed to ramp up production without compromising quality. Since their aluminum coffee cups must meet stringent standards concerning safety, durability, and aesthetics, even minor defects such as small holes, dents, or material overlaps can significantly compromise coffee quality and customer satisfaction. Thus, they sought Averna’s expertise to develop a compact, automated solution that could be seamlessly integrated into existing production lines, ensuring unmatched speed and precision.

The Averna system is installed right after Datwyler’s twelve-cup aluminum press. By utilizing advanced cameras, specialized lighting, and image processing algorithms, the system evaluates each cup in real-time at speeds reaching up to 8 meters per second. This represents a complex challenge as the system must achieve 100% accuracy in differentiating between harmless stretch marks and actual defects. Each inspection station processes 1,800 cups per minute, and with five systems operating simultaneously, Datwyler can now inspect and sort an impressive 9,000 cups every minute. Any defective cups are automatically redirected for recycling, contributing to waste reduction and enhanced sustainability.
