150 Years of Service by NYSPCC
The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC) is heralding a significant milestone in its history — a commendable 150 years of dedication toward child welfare. Founded in 1875, it holds the distinction of being the first child protection agency in the United States. Since its inception, NYSPCC has been a pivotal resource for countless children and their families, particularly those grappling with trauma due to abuse and neglect. Having served over two million children to date, the organization’s legacy is marked by its unwavering commitment to child safety and emotional healing.
To commemorate this remarkable milestone, the NYSPCC will host a grand 150th Anniversary Gala on November 12, 2025, at the iconic Rainbow Room located in New York City. This celebratory evening will be hosted by Sandra Bookman, a prominent anchor at WABC-TV. Among those being honored are Elbridge T. Gerry Jr. and his family, whose support has been vital to the organization's existence, alongside Jeffrey R. Gural, Chairman of GFP Real Estate, recognized for his substantial contributions toward enhancing child welfare.
NYSPCC’s Board Chair, Lincoln Frank, emphasized the significance of this occasion, reflecting on the enduring legacy of the Gerry and Breed families. He acknowledged their ancestors' trailblazing endeavors, particularly that of Elbridge Gerry, who co-founded the NYSPCC at a time when children's rights were virtually overlooked in New York City and across the nation. Frank stated, “We continue that legacy through trauma-informed services that help families build safety, stability, and connection.”
Looking ahead, the organization intends to expand its range of services under the leadership of its current President and CEO, Aysha E. Schomburg. With several initiatives slated for the future, the NYSPCC will increase access to free therapy and concrete support for families from all walks of life. Schomburg expressed gratitude towards Mr. Gural, who is credited as the inaugural sponsor for the forthcoming Family Healing Center. This expansion aims to facilitate healing for additional families in need of psychological support. “The NYSPCC is proud to recognize Mr. Gural’s commitment to child well-being through the Strength of Our Society Award,” she said.
