California Fire Foundation Promotes Preparedness During Wildfire Awareness Month

California Fire Foundation Promotes Wildfire Preparedness

As California enters May, the California Fire Foundation (CFF) takes this opportunity to declare it Wildfire Preparedness Month. This initiative serves as a powerful reminder for all residents to prepare adequately for the ongoing wildfire threats that face the state, while also honoring the courage of firefighters who risk their lives daily. The current wildfire reality in California is alarming: more than 1,000 wildfires have burned over 61,000 acres as of April 2025. The combination of climate change and a prolonged drought means that these disasters are becoming a year-round threat, prompting the need for constant vigilance and preparation.

The Importance of Preparedness

Over 25% of Californians are living in high-risk wildfire zones, according to Cal OES statistics, making the significance of year-round preparedness more crucial than ever. Brian K. Rice, the Chair of the California Fire Foundation and President of California Professional Firefighters, emphasizes, "Wildfire season used to run from July through October—now it's every month of the year. Preparedness saves lives and property. It's how we protect our families—and honor the sacrifice of those protecting us."

To support community members, the CFF has re-launched the "Firefighters On Your Side" campaign. This initiative offers multilingual resources aimed at educating residents on how to prepare effectively for wildfires. Here’s a brief overview of recommended steps for all Californians:

  • - Create Defensible Space: It's vital to establish defensible zones around homes to minimize the risk of wildfire damage.
- Zone 0 (0-5 ft): Keep this area devoid of any flammable materials; using gravel or concrete is recommended.
- Zone 1 (5-30 ft): Trim trees, eliminate dry brush, and create space between plants to reduce fire risk.
- Zone 2 (30-100 ft): Maintain vegetation by thinning it and removing dead plants.

  • - Develop a 5-Minute Evacuation Plan: In the event of an emergency, having a swift evacuation plan can be a matter of life and death.
  • - Prepare Emergency Go-Bags: Pack essential items to enable a quick escape when necessary.
  • - Checklist for Preparedness: Utilize the complete wildfire preparedness checklist available through the California Fire Foundation.

Honoring Our Heroes

May’s campaign is also dedicated to raising funds for the expansion of the California Firefighters Memorial Wall located in Capitol Park, Sacramento. With over 1,500 names already commemorated, the wall has reached its limit, and further expansions are necessary to continue to honor the families of fallen firefighters. For those willing to contribute, a limited-edition Memorial Expansion Challenge Coin is available to donors who give $125 or more. These coins serve as both a personal keepsake and a way to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The CFF also invites community members to share stories and memories of firefighters through its Oral History Project. This initiative aims to capture and honor the experiences of those who serve and have served in their fight against wildfires. Those interested can contribute recordings by leaving a voicemail at (916) 883-3580.
