Reworld® and Goodwill Team Up for Free E-Waste Recycling in Pennsylvania

Reworld® Partners with Goodwill Industries of NEPA for Free E-Waste Recycling

Reworld®, a frontrunner in sustainable waste management, has made significant strides in promoting environmentally responsible practices through the launch of a free electronic waste recycling program in collaboration with Goodwill Industries of Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA). This initiative, which debuted on July 15, aims to simplify the disposal process of electronic waste across 11 counties in Pennsylvania.

Expanding Access

This partnership is not merely an expansion of recycling locations; it marks a meaningful step toward accessible and sustainable e-waste disposal options. With the addition of Goodwill's network of 10 stores and three donation centers as drop-off points, residents now have various convenient places to dispose of outdated electronics. This includes common items such as computers, monitors, keyboards, and printers, all of which will be responsibly processed by Reworld.

Gordon Burgoyne, the Business Manager of Electronics Recycling at Reworld, highlighted the importance of this initiative: “Our new partnership extends our reach across the state of Pennsylvania, providing more residents with the opportunity to dispose of end-of-life electronics responsibly and without incurring costs.” The program is designed to tackle the obstacles faced by residents in populated areas, where the disposal of large electronics can often incur additional fees or limited collection days.

Community Engagement

The launch event drew significant interest from local officials, including Scranton's Mayor Paige Cognetti and representatives from congressional and senatorial offices, showcasing community support for the program. Leaders emphasized that this initiative is a crucial step toward keeping electronic waste out of landfills, thus protecting the environment.

Kate Dempsey Jones, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of NEPA, expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating, “This free program is a testament to Goodwill Industries of NEPA's commitment to our community and the environment. It will reduce waste, reuse items still useful, and responsibly recycle electronics while advancing sustainability in our communities.”

Upholding Standards

The collaboration not only strives to reduce waste but also adheres to strict regulatory compliance under Pennsylvania's Covered Device Recycling Act. The collected electronics will be refurbished or recycled in line with both state laws and international e-Stewards standards, ensuring that the process is safe and effective.

As part of this initiative, through the involvement of MRM (Material Recycling Management), manufacturers support the program by aiding in the fulfillment of state regulatory requirements. Tricia Conroy, Executive Director of MRM, commented, “Our ongoing partnerships with Reworld and Goodwill are helping make responsible recycling more accessible while advancing our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and a circular economy.”

The Bigger Picture

This partnership is part of a larger movement aiming to shift how electronic waste is handled in the state. Reworld and Goodwill NEPA are united in their mission to improve e-waste management in Pennsylvania and leave a positive mark on the state's environment for future generations. The need for such accessibility and environmental consciousness in waste disposal has never been more urgent.

Individuals are encouraged to visit Goodwill NEPA’s website to find a complete list of acceptable items and to learn more about this groundbreaking program. Reworld is poised to lead the way in e-waste solutions that prioritize both sustainability and community engagement.
