The Success of Osaka-Kansai Expo: Insights from University of Tokyo Students

In a recent survey conducted by the Sankei Research & Data in collaboration with the 'Rule Making Strategy Organization', primarily operated by students from the University of Tokyo, over 2,245 responses were collected regarding opinions on the Osaka-Kansai Expo held in 2025. The majority of the participants—from November 6 to 13—overwhelmingly rated the event as a success. Over 70% of respondents expressed positive sentiments about the expo, while more than 60% believed that Japan should continue hosting similar events in the future.

Popular Highlights of the Expo

One of the standout features of the Osaka-Kansai Expo was the large roof ring, which received exceptional acclaim from 85.4% of visitors. When asked about their favorite attractions within the expo grounds, 57.7% highlighted the international pavilions, where each nation had its own dedicated space.

Inquiring about the fate of the roof ring, an overwhelming 79.6% of individuals expressed a desire for it to be preserved in some manner, emphasizing the emotional and cultural value of this architectural landmark to attendees.

Operational Challenges Faced During the Expo

While the expo was largely viewed as successful, visitors also identified significant operational challenges that hindered their experience. A staggering 70.9% noted issues related to ticket purchasing and reservations, and 67.6% pointed out long queues as a critical concern. Other issues raised included coping with extreme heat (40.2%), visitor attendance peaking towards the end of the event (36.4%), and transportation access difficulties (32.2%).

Overall Success and Future Prospects of Expos

A significant finding from the survey revealed that roughly 74.3% of participants considered the Osaka-Kansai Expo to be a success. Interestingly, attendees who actually visited the expo rated it positively at 87.8%, compared to 66.9% from those who did not attend. Additionally, when asked about the feasibility of hosting large-scale expos in the future, 63.5% endorsed the continuation of such events, with a noteworthy 83.8% of visitors supporting this idea.

The question of why continuing to host expos is vital found a common thread: 69.2% emphasized the anticipated economic benefits.

Final Thoughts

According to Hironori Betsue, the director of the Rule Making Strategy Organization, the Osaka-Kansai Expo served as a platform for discussing overarching issues that Japan faces today, showcasing the nation’s technological prowess and cultural capabilities. The collective experiences and energy shared among the 25.57 million attendees raise important questions about how these insights will influence future policies and societal discussions.

As Japan navigates its path forward, the expo has prompted reflections about the role of large-scale international events in fostering dialogue, understanding, and collaboration in addressing the challenges of today and tomorrow.
