Cybertrust Recently Achieves Matter Compliance Certification
Cybertrust Inc., headquartered in Minato Ward, Tokyo, has announced that it has received certification as a Root Certification Authority (CA) under the industry standard for smart homes,
Matter. This certification allows Cybertrust to issue intermediaries’ certificates for developers of Matter-compatible products through its Non-VID Scoped Product Attestation Authority (PAA), marking the first certification of its kind for a commercial electronic certification authority in Japan.
This significant accomplishment means that Cybertrust is now registered as a trusted Certification Authority (CA) in the
Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA)'s Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL). Developers can utilize certificates issued only to authentically vetted vendors without the need to build and manage their own PAA, thereby simplifying compliance efforts and expediting the development process.
Background on Matter
Matter is a communication protocol established by the CSA that enables seamless and secure communication between smart home devices, transcending manufacturer and platform limitations. For the Matter-compatible devices to operate within its framework, authentication and proof of authenticity through certificates are essential.
Device Attestation Certificates (DAC) must be embedded in products that have been certified by the CSA, which can only be issued through intermediaries that conform to the Matter compliance policy. Obtaining a DAC requires a robust cascade of trust backed by PAA evaluation through Product Attestation Intermediates (PAI).
This layered structure means manufacturers must have extensive knowledge of CA construction and day-to-day management to successfully implement their own PAA or PAI, presenting substantial operational challenges.
Trust Chain in Certificate Issuance for Matter
Cybertrust joined the CSA in February 2025 and has established a testing Ca that conforms with strict operational regulations for smart home product development. With the new PAA certification, it can now issue PAI certificates to developers working on Matter devices. This capability allows developers to connect their devices seamlessly without needing to establish individual certification processes, enabling them to concentrate on developing their unique functionalities.
Moreover, Cybertrust securely manages the keys required for device authentication within its data centers, thereby enhancing both safety and convenience in smart homes.
Future Developments
In addition to the functionalities offered by the PAA, Cybertrust aims to expand its support infrastructure. They plan to establish and manage PAI CAs, facilitating key generation and certificate issuance specifically for Matter-compatible devices. This comprehensive support aims to alleviate developers' burdens and accelerate their time-to-market for Matter products.
In conclusion, Cybertrust is set to play a crucial role in the evolving smart home landscape by streamlining the certification process and enhancing the interconnectivity of devices, fostering a more interoperable and secure environment for consumers.
