This partnership allows Aethero to draw on-demand power, enhancing its capability to integrate more energy-efficient designs for spacecraft by offloading peak power demands onto Star Catcher’s orbital energy grid. Historically, satellite operators had to design their spacecraft around the limitations of peak-power loads, which often meant larger and heavier solar arrays and battery systems. However, with this new agreement, Aethero can optimize its designs, minimizing hardware footprints and reducing the risk of orbital collisions. This significant advancement can ultimately lead to better performance and lower costs.

Eliminating Power Bottlenecks



The need for scalable Space Data Centers and Content Distribution Networks (CDNs) has surged, given the exponential growth in data processing demands. The ability to provide dynamic power availability in orbit is crucial for real-time data processing, thereby eliminating the need to transfer raw data back to Earth over limited channels. This expanded capacity is expected to positively impact various sectors, including defense, AI-enhanced Earth observation, and dynamic telecommunications routing. The transition from traditional methods to the new model demonstrated by this partnership allows for a considerably larger computation capacity in space, which was previously constrained by the availability of power.

Star Catcher’s innovative approach employs wireless optical power beaming technologies, which enable solar energy harvesting and the immediate transmission of concentrated power to existing satellite systems without any need for retrofitting. It dramatically increases the generation capacity, allowing satellites to utilize up to ten times more power as needed. Research undertaken internally indicates that this method of power offloading can multiply orbital compute architecture revenues between 1.9 to 3.5 times, showcasing the financial incentive of this technological shift.

Andrew Rush, co-founder and CEO of Star Catcher, underlines the foundational significance of the infrastructure being developed. He emphasizes that overcoming the historical power constraints has paved the way for new spaces of potential in orbit. Reiterating the historical challenges faced in leading past projects, Rush notes that removing the power bottleneck is essential for future advancements in space technology.

The PPA marks a key milestone as it is now the tenth major commercial contract for Star Catcher’s energy grid, contributing to a substantial backlog of over $60 million. Both Aethero and Star Catcher are gearing up for critical operational milestones; Aethero is set to launch its next-generation NxA-ECM compute module aboard the Titan mission this October, bringing unprecedented supercomputing capacity to Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This module aims to enhance space-based cloud infrastructure and establish CDNs capable of delivering high-demand data directly to terrestrial users.

In parallel, Star Catcher is preparing for its first in-space power beaming technology demonstration by the end of the year, with subsequent missions already under development, stating the intent to solidify their respective operations within the expanding orbital network.
