The Passing of Frédéric Panaïotis: A Loss for Champagne and Innovation

Remembering Frédéric Panaïotis: A Visionary in Champagne

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Frédéric Panaïotis, Chief Winemaker at the prestigious Champagne Maison, Ruinart, on June 15, 2025, at the age of 60. His departure leaves a profound void in the world of Champagne, where he was not only a highly respected figure but also a cherished friend and colleague to many.

Frédéric’s journey in the realm of Champagne began in his childhood, where he spent significant time in his grandparents' vineyards in the Champagne region. His love for harvesting Chardonnay grapes with them sparked a life-long passion for the wine industry. Educated at the Paris Grignon National Institute of Agronomy and later obtaining his national degree in winemaking from the Montpellier National School of Agronomy in 1988, he honed his craft amidst the idyllic vineyards he adored.

His early career took him between France and California, where he developed a unique perspective on wine production. In 1991, he returned to Champagne, becoming a key member of the Committee of Champagne Wine Producers and later joining Veuve Clicquot. His pivotal role at Ruinart began in 2007 when he was appointed as Chief Winemaker, a position in which he would redefine the house’s status in the industry.

Over the past 18 years at Ruinart, Frédéric shaped the house with his thoughtful and innovative approach to winemaking. His consistent work with Chardonnay became a hallmark of his legacy, as he expressed the grape's elegance and freshness with clarity and restraint across all of Ruinart’s cuvées, from non-vintage offerings to the prestige cuvée Dom Ruinart and Dom Ruinart Rosé.

Frédéric was also a strong advocate for sustainability within the industry, championing significant developments like the introduction of the second-skin case, the adoption of tree planting in vineyards, and the establishment of a historic wine cellar at 4 Rue des Crayères. His focus on environmentally conscious practices culminated in the release of the cuvée Ruinart Blanc Sangliers, reflecting climate changes through a reimagined interpretation of Chardonnay.

His work was distinguished by scientific precision combined with profound respect for nature and people, leaving a meaningful legacy for Ruinart. It’s a legacy that will continue to guide future generations within the wine industry.

In a heartfelt statement, Frédéric Dufour, President of Maison Ruinart, shared, “Frédéric Panaïotis was a truly unique character. Though rational, he possessed a remarkable sensitivity. Passionate, curious, and dedicated, he exemplified the values of Ruinart and embodied the spirit of Champagne. His unique vision will shape our house for decades to come.”

Throughout this difficult time, our thoughts are with Frédéric’s family, loved ones, and close colleagues. The Champagne community mourns the loss of a monumental figure who not only cherished the traditions of winemaking but also helped steer it into a sustainable future. His absence will undeniably be felt deeply across the globe in the coming years, as we all remember and celebrate the remarkable life of Frédéric Panaïotis.
