Experience the Enchantment of Glass Art at 'Kagerohi' Exhibition in Japan

Discover the Beauty of 'Kagerohi'

This summer, a captivating exhibition titled "Kagerohi" is being held at TABAYA United Arrows, showcasing the exquisite talent of three renowned Japanese glass artists under the curation of GALLERY ESCAPERS. "Kagerohi," which translates to the shimmering phenomenon of mirage, has been used since the Man'yō period to express fleeting moments where light flickers and outlines dissolve. Just like these wondrous instances, glass as a medium transforms with touch and changes its appearance with varying angles of light.

Crafted with Love: Works by Sachiko Matsubara

The exhibition features special limited-edition pieces created by Sachiko Matsubara, using the unique "TABAYA Blue". Among her works, the "stone + glass" series showcases the artist's mastery in manipulating glass thickness and color. These pieces are not only aesthetically striking but imbued with the essence of seasonal elements as they reflect the intricate layering of glass, evoking serene seaside memories.

Matsubara, a graduate of Tama Art University’s Craft Department, has spent years refining her craft at the Azumino Glass Studio before establishing herself as an independent artist in 2008. Her works are deeply inspired by the textures of travel—sights, scents, and the feel of the air—transforming ordinary sensations into poetic expressions encapsulated in glass. The name "copo e eu" embodies her philosophy, meaning “cup and I” in Portuguese, signifying the personal and intimate relationship between the artist and her creations.

Come meet Matsubara on July 10th and 11th! She will be available at the gallery starting from noon on both days.

Unique Wind Chimes by Yoshiko Nitta

In addition to Matsubara’s stunning creations, Yoshiko Nitta will be presenting her exquisite wind chimes made using the sandblasting technique. Each piece offers a unique combination of shape, pattern, and tone—bringing the sweet nostalgia of summer to life with their melodious chimes. Her glass objects echo the intricate characters found within nature, showcasing both aesthetic beauty and the calming essence of the seasons.

Graduating from Kurashiki University of Science and Arts in 2000, Nitta honed her craft at TAIZO GLASS STUDIO and Studio Re-Light before embarking on her journey as an independent artist. Her meticulous sandblasting technique offers a serene contrast, highlighting the subtle qualities of glass while adding elegant, textured patterns to her work.

A Broad Spectrum of Creations by Satomi Ando

Completing the trio of talented artists is Satomi Ando, known for her manipulation of melted glass into delicate forms. Her broad range of works includes elegant vases, stunning plates, and wall-mounted designs made with platinum, each piece capturing the gentle flow of water and the organic essence of nature.

A native of Aichi Prefecture, Ando graduated from Toyama Glass Art Institute in 2019 and enriched her skills through extensive training in Seto city. Using glass-blowing techniques at temperatures exceeding 1200°C, her creations evoke the serene dynamism of water intertwined with the nuances of glass.
