Journey into Mythology with the 'Sun Train'
The beautiful town of Takachiho in Miyazaki Prefecture is known for its deep roots in Japanese mythology, particularly the legend of Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess. With the new initiative of the 'Sun Train', this charming area looks to revitalize its cultural heritage while inviting travelers to enjoy the spectacular views it has to offer.
Recently, Kyodo News Digital has taken on the branding of the Takachiho Amaterasu Railway, introducing the concept of the 'Sun Train'. This initiative encompasses various creative approaches including naming, producing a brand video, developing a special website, and executing advertising campaigns across the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Embracing a Rich Cultural Heritage
Takachiho is a place celebrated in the ancient chronicles of Japan, such as the 'Nihon Shoki', where it is said that deities once resided. The 'Sun Train' is designed to connect this area rich in mythology with the stunning scenes witnessed from the 105-meter-high Takachiho Bridge. The train's route offers breathtaking views of the sunset while traveling along the remnants of the former Takachiho line.
This new branding project aims to highlight the unique allure of the train and promote the feeling of openness as it sails through the sky.
A Creative Launch
With the unveiling of the 'Sun Train', several creative elements have been developed.
The brand video highlights the train as it journeys through the enchanting natural beauty of Takachiho, offering an emotional narrative that invites viewers into the mythical realm during winter when the sun shines most beautifully. View the video

A dedicated website has been launched, encapsulating the essence of the 'Sun Train'. Visitors can explore the brand video, photo galleries, the history of Takachiho Amaterasu Railway, and scenic views, alongside inspiring stories from the staff about restoring the defunct Takachiho line. Additionally, the site features a miniature-themed movie attraction titled “Fantasy Line Trip”, only available at the museum.
- - ### Advertising Campaigns in Tokyo
To promote the 'Sun Train', advertisements will be featured in train interiors around Tokyo. This visual campaign aims to connect ordinary urban commuters with the breathtaking landscapes found in rural Japan, sparking a desire for travel and exploration.
Engaging with the Local Community
Takachiho Amaterasu Railway Co., under the direction of President Masayasu Kudo, aims to preserve the area's railway history and cultural significance. The hardships faced by the original Takachiho line serve as a poignant reminder of Japan's rich railway history, which was interrupted due to natural disasters.
Starting with a wooden hand-cranked trolley in 2009, the railway has progressively revived the line with the ambition to welcome back visitors to the region, echoing the connections made in the past through railway travel. President Kudo highlights, “The sight of the sun from the train during winter is truly beautiful. Please ride the 'Sun Train' this winter in Takachiho, where the myth of Amaterasu resides. We look forward to welcoming everyone.”
As the 'Sun Train' begins its journey, it offers an enchanting way to immerse oneself in Japanese cultural history and the breathtaking landscapes of Takachiho. Join us as we celebrate the past while paving the way for an exciting future in travel and tourism.
