The 36th Toshima Noh Performance: Youkai and Spirits
The Toshima Mirai Cultural Foundation, located in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, is thrilled to announce the return of the
36th Toshima Noh Performance after a three-year hiatus. This event serves as a special commemorative project celebrating the foundation's 40th anniversary and will take place in the historic
Yarai Noh Theatre, an important cultural asset designated by the country.
Since its inception in 1988, the Toshima Noh Performance has captivated audiences every year until 2022 and is now set to make a grand comeback. The theme for this year's program is
“Youkai and Spirits,” immersing guests in a world filled with myth and folklore.
Noh and
Kyogen performances bring to life characters such as the comedic “
Mushi no Sei” (Spirit of the Mosquito) and “
Kani no Sei” (Spirit of the Crab), as well as the legendary figures of
Tamamo-no-Mae and
Kurama Tengu.
The afternoon session features the powerful performance of
Sesshōseki (The Killing Stone) with special staging elements highlighting the
Hakuto (White Head), ensuring a unique experience for viewers. The evening session showcases
Kurama Tengu, with appearances by local elementary school students, showcasing the next generation of talent eager to shine on stage.
This performance promises to be a rich tapestry of diverse youkai (monsters) and spirits, presenting an opportunity for attendees to enjoy an unforgettable cultural experience.
