Huawei Unveils Next-Generation OTN for Fully Optical Networks Targeting AIDC

At the Optical Transport Innovation Summit during NetworkX 2026, Huawei unveiled its ambitious vision for the construction of a fully optical network termed 'LIGHTS'. This innovative approach aims to leverage the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate operators in enhancing their network capabilities while meeting growing demands for data connectivity.

Gavin Gu, President of Optical Transmission Networks at Huawei, articulated the potential of AI in reshaping the telecommunications landscape, highlighting three critical waves of opportunity. These include enhancing interconnectivity between data centers, providing dedicated access links for enterprises to tap into computing resources, and delivering integrated computing and networking services. By transforming traditional optical transmission—originally tailored for consumer use—into a robust business network, Huawei is pushing for a paradigm shift towards automation and intelligent data connectivity (AIDC).

To realize this vision, the new generation OTN (Optical Transport Network) from Huawei focuses on enabling operators to build fully optical networks perfectly aligned with AIDC requirements. This OTN solution features six pivotal capabilities: low latency, intelligent operation, ecological sustainability, high reliability, terabit-level capacity, and security guarantees. Such functionalities are essential to support operators' transition from basic service-based models to value-added services that meet the diverse needs of various industries.

The upgraded OTN solution provides ultra-fast transmission capabilities ranging from 800G to 2T, ensuring efficient bandwidth pooling for simultaneous multiple-directional capacity sharing while minimizing resource utilization. By optimizing fiber optic capacity and service launch timelines, operators can swiftly align their offerings with the ever-evolving traffic demands while maximizing operational efficiency.

Moreover, focusing on data center interconnects (DCI), the new OTN employs a strategic end-to-end optical cross-connect (OXC) solution. This architecture promotes a direct one-hop connection integrated with Wavelength Switched Optical Networks (WSON) that provides rapid switch times measured in milliseconds, ensuring maximum availability and flexible bandwidth distribution between 10 Mb/s and 1 Gb/s. Incidentally, this upgrade includes an integrated Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) mechanism for enhanced security.

Under the LIGHTS framework, operators are encouraged to shift from a traditional bandwidth-only sales model towards a multi-parameter service provision model that encompasses latency, reliability, and security, paving the way for differentiated offerings across various sectors. As an illustrative case, in the Hubei province of China, operators are combining their network and computing capabilities to deliver integrated solutions tailored for key industries such as education, healthcare, and finance.

This fully optical network strategy is designed to enable operators to effectively capitalize on the opportunities presented by AI advancements while facilitating network monetization and business growth. Huawei is committed to collaborating with industry partners to foster technological innovations and promote business growth, thereby propelling the optical transmission sector into the AI era. The implications of such advancements are far-reaching, signaling a new dawn for the telecommunications industry where agile and intelligent networks redefine service delivery and operational efficiencies.

In conclusion, Huawei's innovations in Optical Transport Networks represent a critical step towards fully optimizing optical networks for AI-driven applications, asserting their position as leading enablers of the future of telecommunications.
