Ontario Invests $1.7 Million to Boost Life Sciences Innovation at Piramal Pharma Aurora Site
Ontario Invests in Life Sciences at Piramal Pharma
Ontario has taken a significant step to enhance innovation in the life sciences sector by investing $1.7 million into the Piramal Pharma site located in Aurora. This initiative is part of the Life Sciences Scale-Up Fund (LSSUF), aimed at strengthening Ontario's positioning as a leader in health innovation.
Piramal Pharma Solutions, a major Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), is matching the provincial investment with over $5.3 million aimed at modernizing its production facilities. This substantial financial commitment underlines a robust growth trajectory leading to the creation of 12 new jobs and the preservation of 183 existing positions at the Aurora site.
The funding will allow Piramal to upgrade its infrastructure, ensuring the production of essential pharmaceutical ingredients is not only preserved but also enhanced. Peter DeYoung, the CEO of Piramal Global Pharma, expressed gratitude for the government support, emphasizing the critical role of this investment in meeting global healthcare demands and enhancing operational efficiency. He noted, “This funding will help us modernize our facilities, boost production capabilities, and better serve patients and clients worldwide.”
This modernization is also expected to enable the facility to commercialize health technologies produced in Ontario, opening new markets for the company while contributing to a resilient life sciences sector that remains competitive on a global scale.
Dawn Gallagher Murphy, the Member of Provincial Parliament for Newmarket—Aurora, reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering local businesses. She stated, “Thanks to the Life Sciences Scale-Up Fund, companies like Piramal can develop and deploy innovative technologies across the healthcare system, creating well-paying jobs and fortifying Ontario’s reputation as a global hub for bio-manufacturing and life sciences.”
The LSSUF was launched in 2024 with an initial budget of $24 million, aiming to support Ontario companies whose endeavors accelerate the adoption of innovative healthcare technologies. Following its success, an additional $24 million has been allocated, aligning with the provincial strategy to provide connected, patient-centered care closer to homes throughout Ontario.
Vic Fedeli, the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, highlighted the importance of the life sciences industry in drug discovery and technological advancements. He stated, “By investing in Piramal through the LSSUF, we're not just enhancing local capabilities—we're securing Ontario’s place as a center of excellence for life sciences investments for generations to come.”
The investment also signifies broader implications for sustainable development initiatives that Piramal is championing, aimed at environmentally responsible practices in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
In conclusion, by bolstering the Aurora site of Piramal Pharma, the Ontario government is not only fortifying local employment and industry but is also in pursuit of a transformative and resilient future for healthcare delivery—intensifying its role as a significant player on the global stage in life sciences.
