Jilin's Cultural Diplomacy Shines in Hungary and Spain: A Path to Mutual Benefits

The Radiance of Jilin in Hungary and Spain: Cultivating Mutual Benefits

In April 2025, Jilin province, located in northeast China, embarked on a cultural and tourism promotion initiative that left a significant mark in both Hungary and Spain. This initiative was not merely a representation of a local culture but a strategic move to strengthen international ties, foster mutual understanding, and promote bilateral benefits through tourism and cultural exchanges.

The visit aligns with the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain, as well as the 50-year milestone in diplomatic relations between China and the European Union. To commemorate these events, a cultural delegation from Jilin organized events showcasing its unique heritage and contributions to the global stage.

During a spectacular art performance in Madrid, the richness of Jilin’s culture was showcased, marking a pivotal moment for cultural diplomacy. These performances were not only entertaining but served as a means to engage with local communities, fostering a deeper appreciation for Jilin's artistic traditions. The event highlighted the province's aim to boost cultural exchanges and tourism, ideologies that resonate deeply within China's broader initiative of opening up and collaborating with global partners.

Promoting Jilin’s Cultural Landscape

As part of the promotion activities, various projects focusing on cultural, tourism, and media cooperation were signed to facilitate mutual benefits between Jilin and its European partners. This strategic approach is rooted in Jilin's vision to enhance its openness and modernize its local industrial landscape by effectively utilizing its natural scenery and established industrial base to attract international investors and visitors.

Jilin, often referred to as the birthplace of the Chinese automotive industry, has been a key player since the establishment of the country's first automobile workshop in 1953. Over the years, especially since the early 1990s, Jilin has progressively partnered with Germany to expand its automotive and component sectors further. Today, it boasts a comprehensive industrial system encompassing 40 of the 41 industrial categories and 31 major manufacturing sectors.

Additionally, the Changchun Film Studio, regarded as the cradle of Chinese cinema, adds a cinematic flair to Jilin’s cultural offerings, embodying its rich historical and industrial legacy that spans over 80 years.

Tourism Flourishing in Jilin

Since the winter of 2023, Jilin's cultural and tourism market has experienced remarkable growth, prompting the province to intensify efforts in promoting its tourism industry. One of the standout attractions is the Changbai Mountain, renowned for its extended winter season and high-quality snowfall, ranking among the world’s top three skiing destinations, alongside the European Alps and the Rocky Mountains in North America.

The historical significance of Jilin cannot be overlooked, as it served as the capital of the ancient Goguryeo kingdom between 37 BC and 668 AD. The province is now leveraging its UNESCO World Heritage site status to promote and preserve the heritage of Goguryeo, establishing the G331 cultural heritage protection corridor as a vital endeavor.

In 2024, Jilin saw a 66% increase in visitor numbers and a 69% rise in total income from tourism. The sector has transformed the local economy significantly, with cross-border tourism seeing a staggering 161% increase year-on-year. This influx of tourists has catalyzed growth in related sectors, including dining, accommodation, and entertainment, shaping a vibrant tourism landscape in the province.

Conclusion

The cultural diplomacy efforts by Jilin province in Hungary and Spain exemplify a proactive approach towards fostering international relationships through cultural exchange and tourism promotion. As Jilin continues to unveil its cultural treasures, it stands poised to attract more visitors and investments, creating a reciprocal relationship that nurtures mutual understanding and benefits on a global scale.
