Exploring Curry as a Catalyst for Change: Yuki Shimizu's New Book Launch

Discovering the Depth of Curry Through Yuki Shimizu's Journey

Yuki Shimizu, a dedicated researcher of Indian cuisine and the founder of Tokyo Masala Research Institute, is set to release his first solo book titled "Curry as a Cultural Compass" on June 5, 2026. This groundbreaking book aims to change how we see the world through the lens of curry, which is celebrated as one of Japan's most popular dishes.

Shimizu's aspiration is to invite readers to redefine their understanding of curry, moving beyond mere recipes. The book explores the definitions, history, and philosophy of curry, ultimately leading to profound questions such as, "How does curry become a matter of life?" This ambition sets the stage for a deeper philosophical dialogue that aims to connect culinary traditions with broader human experiences.

To celebrate this upcoming release, a dialogue event will be held on July 13, 2026, at Bookstore B&B in Shimokitazawa. This event will feature renowned philosophical dialogue practitioner Rei Nagai, who will join Shimizu in exploring diverse themes surrounding curry culture. Attendees can participate either in person or via online streaming, with the latter option allowing access to the event for three months post-broadcast.

The book also addresses a significant gap in literature; while curry is widely consumed, very few publications confront the fundamental question of what curry truly represents. Rather than focusing on recipes or food journeys, Shimizu’s work aims to broaden our understanding of curry’s potential impact on our perceptions of the world.

Curry, with its intricate use of spices, serves as a reflection of historical context, including the darker realities of colonialism. It encapsulates cultural expressions that relate us to distant traditions and highlights how culinary practices can facilitate cultural translation.

Yuki Shimizu: A Journey Through Culinary Philosophy

Shimizu's career path has not been linear, but rather marked by multiple detours and explorations. After studying philosophy at Tohoku University, he joined Sony Corporation, aiming to engage in business related to India. However, following a setback, he pursued further academic achievements at Kyoto University, where he is currently enrolled in a PhD program focused on the anthropology of South Asian culinary culture and modern Indian cuisine. Alongside his research, he writes and conducts culinary events under the title
