Lebanese American University Celebrates 100 Years at Its Centennial Gala in New York

Celebrating a Century of Service: LAU's Centennial Gala in New York

On March 13, 2025, the Lebanese American University (LAU) hosted its Centennial Gala Dinner at the prestigious New York Public Library, celebrating 100 years of commitment to education and healthcare in Lebanon. This special event marked not only the anniversary of the institution but also served as a platform to raise funds for student scholarships and healthcare initiatives.

The glamorous evening drew a diverse crowd, including prominent figures such as New York State Assemblymember Alex Bores, Lebanon’s Ambassador to the United Nations Hadi Hachem, and Consul General of Lebanon in New York, Majdi Ramadan, along with members of the Board of Trustees and alumni. As guests gathered in the beautiful venue, they shared a collective goal: to support LAU in its ongoing efforts to uplift the Lebanese community, especially as the country rebuilds after years of crisis.

Philip Stoltzfus, Chairman of the LAU Board of Trustees, welcomed attendees with a heartfelt address, emphasizing the university’s enduring commitment to serve Lebanon through education and healthcare. He stated, “The Lebanese American University is a trusted institution because we strive to do the right thing, decade after decade, even in tough times.” This commitment was echoed throughout the night as attendees reflected on the university’s rich heritage.

A significant highlight of the evening was the announcement by LAU President Chaouki T. Abdallah regarding a historic gift from Trustee Raymond Debbane and his family. This contribution, the largest in LAU’s history, will help propel the university’s global strategy and strengthen its New York campus. With gratitude, Abdallah encouraged attendees to extend help to students in Lebanon and foster future leaders.

The gala also honored two exceptional individuals: Sassine Ghazi, CEO of Synopsys and LAU alumnus, and Elissa, a celebrated Arab pop singer and advocate for women’s rights. Ghazi was recognized for his lifetime achievements in innovation and excellence, while Elissa was applauded for her courageous advocacy against breast cancer. Their stories resonate deeply with LAU’s mission to empower future generations.

As Elissa passionately stated, “Today, more than ever, our nation needs passionate leaders with access to education.” Her words serve as a call to action, underscoring the vital role that education plays in shaping leaders who can navigate Lebanon's future.

The gala was co-chaired by LAU trustees, H.H. Sheikha Intisar Al Sabah and Mr. Peter Tanous, whose guidance and support highlight the collaborative efforts necessary to sustain LAU's mission.

Founded in 1924, LAU has established itself as a prominent institution, with two campuses and two academic hospitals in Lebanon, alongside its New York campus. With over 9,000 students and 1,100 faculty members, LAU remains dedicated to providing quality liberal arts education and making a meaningful impact in the Middle East and North Africa region.

As the evening concluded, it was clear that the spirit of hope and unyielding dedication continues to shape the future of LAU. The Centennial Gala not only celebrated the past but also set the stage for continued growth and service in the decades to come.
