Exploring the Future of Corporate Controllers: The Controllership 2030 Predictions Study
In a rapidly evolving business landscape, the role of corporate financial controllers is set to transform dramatically by the year 2030. The Controllers Council, a key association dedicated to professionals in corporate accounting and finance, has undertaken a comprehensive study titled the Controllership 2030™ Predictions Study. This insightful research sheds light on how the landscape for financial controllers and their associated executives will evolve over the next five years, particularly driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and automation.
Conducted between July and September 2026, the study involved a national survey targeting controllers, chief financial officers (CFOs), and executives across various industries and company sizes. The findings reveal some crucial emerging trends that are shaping the future of the controllership role in corporate finance.
Key Findings from the Study
The findings of the study are striking, indicating a significant increase in the utilization of AI in finance operations. Nearly 98% of respondents anticipate that their organizations will employ AI and automation by the year 2030, in stark contrast to the 86% currently using these technologies. This anticipated growth is not merely about adoption; it articulates a drastic shift in the roles and responsibilities expected of controllers. Tasks traditionally performed by financial controllers are set to be automated, leading to a transformation of their duties.
With automation taking over many transactional accounting functions, the controllers' roles will evolve into a more hybrid model. Future responsibilities will intertwine the management of AI tools, data analysis, and technology oversight, alongside the necessary technical review of accounting processes.
