ChangAn Launches International NEV Production Base in Thailand to Expand Its Industrial Export Model
ChangAn’s Ambitious Step into International Markets
In a significant move that marks a major milestone in the automotive industry, ChangAn Automobile has officially opened its first international production base for new energy vehicles (NEV) in Rayong, Thailand. This launch is not merely about manufacturing; it represents an expansive vision known as the Vast Ocean Plan, aimed at elevating ChangAn's global footprint in the competitive automotive scene.
A Strategic Expansion
The establishment of the Rayong facility illustrates ChangAn's transition from simply exporting vehicles to exporting comprehensive industrial ecosystems. This modern facility integrates advanced manufacturing systems, research and development processes, and stringent supply chain standards to create a replicable model of sustainable operations. This marks a pivotal shift toward a more integrated industrial strategy in which ChangAn aims to standardize its global operations while promoting local economic development.
With the new plant sprawling over approximately 245 rai (392,000 square meters), it houses five workshops dedicated to welding, painting, assembly, engine and battery assembly, and auxiliary functions, such as exterior inspections. This factory is designed with energy efficiency in mind, minimizing energy consumption per vehicle by around 20% through the implementation of daylight optimization, photovoltaic systems, and greywater recycling. Such sustainable approaches are at the core of ChangAn's manufacturing philosophy.
A Commitment to Local Markets
Simultaneously, during the opening ceremony, ChangAn celebrated the production of its 28.59 millionth vehicle, the DEEPAL S05, developed specifically for right-hand drive markets. This event reflects the company's commitment to its Vast Ocean initiative, which aims to strategically boost their presence in five key overseas markets: Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Central and South America, Europe, and Eurasia, elevating them to the same strategic level as the domestic Chinese market.
ChangAn’s efforts in Thailand have already borne fruit since launching its brand in Southeast Asia in November 2023, with the introduction of seven new models, including the DEEPAL S07, E07, and AVATR 11. Their sales have exceeded 14,000 units, ranking them among the top four brands in Thailand's NEV market. Such success reinforces ChangAn’s dedication to understanding and integrating into local markets while fueling regional economic growth.
Leveraging 41 Years of Expertise
With 41 years of automotive manufacturing expertise, the Rayong factory represents a nexus of local operation and global standards. It sets precedence for cultivating international talent and establishing best practices in operational efficiency across four primary areas: lean production, leadership, productivity, and performance.
Central to this facility’s management strategy is the integration of seven operational systems and six fundamental processes, designed to enhance ChangAn's commitment to excellence. Employing the CAPDS system, the factory also fortifies technical assistance and engineering development in Southeast Asia, focusing on new energy solutions, intelligent systems, adaptive design, and regional product innovation.
As the first international site to standardize production management, Rayong enables rapid product launches, outlining a resilient supply chain that connects both China and Thailand. ChangAn President Zhu Huarong expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “This is a monumental moment for ChangAn—a giant leap from exporting cars to building a local ecosystem.” Despite the growing challenges posed by anti-globalization trends, ChangAn remains undeterred in its Vast Ocean strategy, committed to fostering economic growth in Thailand and advancing the global automotive industry.
Looking Ahead
With forecasts to double the plant's annual capacity from 100,000 to 200,000 units by 2027, ChangAn’s strategic moves in Rayong illustrate its resolve to establish strong connections in the global automotive industry. Their proactive approach in integrating local influence with an international vision sets the stage for future growth in a transformative market landscape. As ChangAn continues to innovate, it contributes to the evolution of sustainable transportation while solidifying its role as a prominent player on the world stage.
