A graduate from the U.S. Air Force Academy, he dedicated his career to the service of his country, holding numerous senior leadership roles in cyber, intelligence, and national security. His extensive military experience includes operations in high-stakes environments, such as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Most recently, Shwedo served as the director for Command, Control, Communications and Computers/Cyber at the Pentagon, where his responsibilities were critical to national security and operational effectiveness. This background equips him with a unique perspective and experience that is invaluable in his new position leading the PenFed Foundation.
Foundation's Mission
The PenFed Foundation for Military Heroes is a nonprofit organization closely aligned with PenFed Credit Union. Established in 2001, the Foundation is committed to assisting veterans as they adjust to civilian life. It has made significant strides in this direction, having provided over $55 million in financial support to veterans, active-duty service members, and military families. Notably, PenFed Credit Union covers all salaries and administrative costs for the Foundation, ensuring that donations are maximally effective in supporting veterans.
Under Shwedo's leadership, the Foundation aims to enhance its initiatives and build new partnerships to facilitate the transition of veterans to meaningful civilian employment and a successful life post-service. James Schenck, president and CEO of PenFed Credit Union, expressed his enthusiasm for Shwedo's appointment, highlighting his operational excellence and deep commitment to service members and their families.
Looking Ahead
As Shwedo step into this pivotal role, he expressed honor and motivation to lead an organization with a rich legacy of support for veterans. He aims to expand the Foundation's programs and resources, emphasizing the importance of assisting those who have sacrificed for the nation. His vision is clear: the Foundation will not only help veterans survive but thrive in their lives after service.
Shwedo's appointment signals a renewed focus on impactful programming that will elevate the opportunities available to veterans and military families. Possible initiatives may include entrepreneurial programs, education access, financial literacy workshops, and employment resources tailored to the specific needs of service members.
Overall, the PenFed Foundation for Military Heroes looks poised for growth and increased impact under the guidance of Shwedo, who will work diligently to ensure that veterans receive the support and resources they need to succeed in their post-military lives. The organization remains committed to its mission of making real differences in the lives of those who have served the country.
