Reflecting on Childhood Cancer Treatment: A Workshop During AYA Week 2026
In March 2026, the certified nonprofit organization Shine On Kids, which supports children fighting illnesses such as childhood cancer, held a remarkable workshop as part of the AYA Week 2026 initiative. This event focused on the "Reflection Beads" art therapy workshop, designed to help young cancer patients and survivors express their experiences and feelings through art.
The Beads of Courage Program
The Beads of Courage program is a unique art-based intervention that encourages children undergoing treatment to create a symbolic necklace of beads, each representing different milestones or experiences during their journey. By participating in this workshop, children worked with trained Beads Ambassadors, allowing them to reflect on their individual journeys, acknowledge their struggles, and celebrate their strength.
The beads strung together become not only a record of their treatment but also a testament to their courage. As part of the workshop, a new component called “Learning Beads” was introduced, made possible through funding from the Benesse Children’s Foundation. Developed within the 2023 grant cycle, these beads are infused with messages related to personal growth and resilience.
