International Conference on Conjoined Twins Concludes
In a historic gathering of medical professionals, humanitarian leaders, and officials, the first
International Conference on Conjoined Twins took place in Riyadh. This groundbreaking event brought together a global assembly aimed at addressing the needs of conjoined twins and improving their medical care. The conference, held over two days, was organized by KSrelief in partnership with other prominent organizations.
The event culminated in an inspiring call to action, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the health and welfare of conjoined twins within international health agendas. H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, Supervisor General of KSrelief, expressed the necessity for collective efforts to enhance the quality of life for individuals with rare diseases. In his closing remarks, he stated, "By emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and compassion, we can offer the care these individuals deserve and help them lead fulfilling lives."
Major Initiatives and Projects Announced
During the conference, participants unveiled new humanitarian initiatives worth nearly
$15 million. Among the key projects was the proposal for a comprehensive
Registry for Conjoined Twins, a collaboration involving KSrelief, UNICEF, and WHO. This digital platform aims to facilitate data collection and medical collaboration, which will greatly benefit the conjoined twin community by streamlining access to medical services and support.
In addition to the registry, various humanitarian projects were announced, including specific programs geared towards health, education, and social support for conjoined twins, particularly after separation surgeries. These initiatives together reflect a proactive approach to addressing the unique challenges faced by these individuals.
Spotlight on Former Patients
The conference also highlighted the stories of formerly conjoined twins, including Princess Anne Manzo and Princess May Manzo from the Philippines, who underwent successful separation surgeries in Saudi Arabia. Now 20 years old and recent college graduates, their inspiring journey was celebrated, showcasing the potential for a bright future after undergoing such complex medical procedures.
Call for Future Collaborations
The conference recognized the urgent need for ongoing dialogue and collaboration, proposing future iterations of the event every
three to five years. This initiative aims to ensure that the global community remains committed to the well-being of conjoined twins and continues to develop innovative solutions to their challenges.
