Financial Literacy Workshop for Teens in Tsukuba City

Introduction

On August 21, 2026, the Japan Financial Education Support Organization, in collaboration with Tsukuba University, will host a groundbreaking financial education workshop for middle and high school students. This event, titled “The Road to the 4th FES Contest in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture,” marks the first of its kind to be held in Ibaraki and the first collaborative effort with a national university.

This initiative aims to provide local students with hands-on experiences in understanding money management and finance. By working alongside university students, participants will explore financial concepts through practical tasks, enhancing their communication skills in the process.

Objectives of the Workshop

The workshop aims to engage students with knowledge about money and encourage them to articulate their understanding. It will feature not only theoretical learning but also active participation through group work and video production. The goal is to foster a hands-on learning environment that sparks curiosity and instills practical financial skills.

Workshop Structure

The event will be held at the newly established Future Society Design Building at Tsukuba University, which serves as a hub for collaboration between students and the community, facilitating the exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Activities

Participants can expect a mix of activities, including:
  • - A mini-lecture on the “Eight Financial Powers”
  • - Interactive group discussions
  • - Planning and producing videos for the FES Contest®

These activities are designed to broaden participants' understanding of money and its various functions in everyday life. The emphasis will be on creating engaging content suitable for younger students, thus deepening their own understanding and the ability to convey it effectively.

Role of University Students

University students will actively participate in the workshop as mentors and guides, assisting middle and high school students throughout the video production process. Their involvement aims to bring fresh perspectives and foster meaningful dialogue across generations.

This venue helps create a dynamic environment that encourages both student interaction and community engagement, perfectly aligning with the workshop's objectives of promoting financial education and collaborative learning.

About the FES Contest®

The FES Contest® is an esteemed nationwide competition encouraging middle and high school students to create and share educational videos about finance aimed at elementary school students. Supported by various governmental agencies, such as the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, this initiative has gained recognition for its innovative approach to financial education.

The related workshops have been acknowledged for their effectiveness, having received awards for their advanced and distinctive educational frameworks. The push towards creating a ‘Children First’ society resonates with broader educational goals, aimed at fostering a generation aware of financial literacy's importance.

Conclusion

By facilitating dialogues and encouraging collaborative work between university and secondary school students, the workshop strives to cultivate a deeper understanding of finance among the youth of Ibaraki Prefecture. This initiative not only represents an opportunity for education but also a chance to build long-lasting connections between students and their futures.
