Development of Clean Energy Combined Heat and Power System for Data Centers



Solution Creators Inc. (SCS), based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has announced the initiation of a development project for a cutting-edge combined heat and power (CHP) system tailored for data centers. This innovative system is designed to effectively utilize renewable energy sources such as hydropower, geothermal energy, and biomass, as well as unused waste heat generated from factories. The CHP system will provide both the electricity needed for the operation of air-cooled, liquid-cooled, and liquid immersion servers, along with the cooling needed to maintain operational efficiency in data centers.

By leveraging proprietary patented technology, SCS aims to deliver clean electricity and cooling simultaneously to servers used for generating artificial intelligence (AI), thus significantly reducing power consumption costs, cooling expenses, and CO2 emissions associated with server operations. This initiative positions SCS to construct “clean energy-based edge data centers” that rely on local renewable energy sources and unused waste heat, overcoming traditional challenges such as grid connection limits and purchasing cost burdens, thereby enhancing business continuity planning (BCP) during regional power outages.

The upcoming clean energy edge data centers are expected to promote local energy consumption by harnessing available renewable energy and waste heat, facilitating low-cost operations without depending on external electricity supplies. SCS plans to develop the demonstration system leading up to market introduction by April 2027. Details about this initiative will be showcased at the CCUS EXPO event, taking place from September 9 to 11, 2026, in Makuhari Messe.

Overview of the Project


The rapid proliferation of AI technologies has led to an unprecedented rise in power consumption and heat generation from servers, resulting in global challenges related to data center operations. Traditional large-scale data centers often face constraints such as connection capacity limits, long lead times for operation commencement, escalating electrical infrastructure and construction costs, increased power and water consumption, and rising CO2 emissions. Solutions are needed to tackle these issues while also addressing concerns regarding long-term power outages and the risks associated with fuel price spikes.

In response, edge data centers are gaining traction, particularly in urban areas, due to the demand for low-latency physical AI applications, data sovereignty, and secure processing of sensitive data. As a viable solution, SCS is focused on constructing edge data centers that utilize local renewable energy and waste heat to generate clean power and cooling, thus addressing environmental concerns while enhancing operational efficiency.

Features of the Developed System


1. Multi-Stage Utilization of Clean Energy: The CHP system integrates various renewable energy sources, such as hydropower for server operation and bioenergy or geothermal heat for cooling systems. This approach not only lowers operational costs and CO2 emissions but also strengthens BCP by ensuring continuous operation during outages.

2. Optimized Technology for High Versatility: The system relies on established technologies for its three main components: power generation; heat exchange and cooling systems; and thermal control supply systems. By optimizing the configuration based on the energy types and quantities available on-site and incorporating AI for unique thermal control systems, SCS achieves a lower cost and accelerated deployment for its edge data center initiatives.

Furthermore, solutions that employ local untapped renewable energy resources can facilitate retrofitting existing facilities, ensuring flexibility and quick implementation in various regional contexts.

Future Developments


Going forward, SCS plans to leverage its patented technology to commercialize the clean energy CHP systems, focusing on both the hydropower energy utilization and waste heat energy utilization systems. Field verification sites will be developed in parallel with inquiries for operational partnerships concerning auxiliary facilities like power generation and cooling systems, promoting the realization and widespread adoption of clean energy edge data centers.

By enhancing collaboration with existing data center operators and enterprises leveraging AI in edge computing, SCS aims to broaden the reach of its cloud services under the brand “Green Cloud®” and edge computing solutions encapsulated within “REDGE®,” aiming for a sustainable and clean energy-driven future.
