The 34th Tachikawa Theatre Festival: A Celebration for and by the Citizens

The 34th Tachikawa Theatre Festival

The upcoming 34th Tachikawa Theatre Festival is set to take place from August 1 to 30, showcasing 16 performances by seven active groups from the Tama region. This event promises to bring together a community passionate about theatre and introduces a range of captivating performances that commendably highlight the local talent.

A Glimpse into the Festival's Origins

The Tachikawa Theatre Festival was initiated in 1992 as a pre-event for the TAMA Life 21 project, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Tokyo's transfer to the Tama area. This initiative originated from the Tachikawa City Cultural Promotion Foundation, aiming to cultivate a vibrant theatre culture within the Tama region. Since its inception, the festival has continuously operated under the guiding principle of being “a festival by citizens for citizens.”

Encouraging participation from local theaters and citizens alike, the festival has transformed into a platform for both seasoned theatre-goers and newcomers. Engaging in a journey to experience and create theatre in the vivacious summer ambiance of Tachikawa, the festival aims to breathe life into the stage and community.

An Engaging Community Experience

The festival not only showcases performances but also involves workshops and events that cater to various aspects of theatre education. The executive committee has organized numerous programs such as workshops covering script writing, the basics of theatre, and hands-on experiences that enable participants to perform on stage. These activities aim to foster a love for both watching and creating theatre among the community.

Related Initiatives: One-Day Stage Experience

On May 30, as part of the festival’s related initiatives, a hands-on workshop titled “One-Day Stage Experience vol.5” was held. Participants engaged in singing, reading, and dancing, culminating in a showcase at Tama-shin RISURU Hall. This event was designed to allow beginners to experience the joy of theatre and the fulfillment of creating a performance collaboratively.
Participants aged between 6 and 73 embraced this creative experience, with instructors from the Tachikawa Theatre Festival Committee guiding a total of 61 citizens in crafting a rendition of Snow White. Many of these instructors will also perform in the upcoming festival, representing the backbone of local theatre culture.
