Make-A-Wish's New Starblazer Awards Celebrate Inspiring Alumni Making a Difference

From Wish Kid to World Changer: The Inaugural Starblazer Awards

Make-A-Wish® has unveiled an exciting new initiative—the Starblazer Awards—a national recognition program designed to honor extraordinary wish alumni. This inaugural event aims to celebrate individuals who, after receiving their wishes, have transformed their experiences into lifelong missions that create a significant impact in their communities and beyond.

The Starblazer Awards are a reflection of the lasting impact that wishes can have. With over 375,000 wish alumni across the nation, Make-A-Wish observes first-hand how former recipients evolve into successful doctors, educators, advocates, and entrepreneurs who are making a real difference in society. As Leslie Motter, the president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America, articulates, "A wish acts as a springboard, providing hope, strength, and joy that resonates long after it’s granted."

Honoring Individuals Who Inspire

Nominees for the Starblazer Awards must be individuals who have received wishes from Make-A-Wish, and nominations can be submitted by anyone, including the alumni themselves. These awards aspire to highlight stories of transformation that inspire future generations. Those who wish to participate in the nomination process can do so at wish.org/starblazer.

The impact of a wish extends beyond the immediate joy it brings; it instills hope and drives the individuals’ missions throughout their lives. This initiative argues against the prevailing notion that Make-A-Wish solely serves children with terminal illnesses. Many wish recipients grow up to lead fulfilling lives, drawing inspiration from their wish experiences.

Generous Support from Heartfelt Donors

The Starblazer Awards owe much of their establishment to the generosity of founders Jim and Colleen Clark, alongside Michael Halle. Their contributions allow the awards to present a unique and heartfelt recognition of outstanding alumni. The Clarks, who reside in Austin, Texas, have dedicated the Olivia Colleen Starblazer Award to their granddaughter—an alumni herself. Through this foundation, they have significantly supported Make-A-Wish endeavors across the country.

Michael Halle, based in Phoenix, Arizona, has been a long-time supporter of the nonprofit and has significantly contributed to the Arizona chapter's activities, including the annual Wish Ball. Thanks to such devoted patrons, the motivation to recognize and celebrate selfless contributions toward community welfare can continue.

Creating a Legacy of Hope

As the Starblazer Awards roll out, Make-A-Wish encourages communities across the country to recognize the incredible stories and accomplishments of wish alumni. The awards will feature celebratory events and will showcase honorees through national platforms throughout the year, ensuring that their inspiring journeys are shared widely.

The mission of these awards is clear: to illustrate how a wish can be a catalyst for substantial change. Many alumni attribute their success stories to the inspiration and motivation that originated from their wish experience. From fostering a belief in themselves as capable contributors to society, these alumni serve essential roles in facilitating positive change.

A Vision for the Future

As the Starblazer Awards program expands, additional awards may be introduced through donor support, ensuring that this recognition grows alongside the wish alumni community. This initiative highlights Make-A-Wish's continued commitment to enhancing the quality of life for children with critical illnesses, demonstrating the power of hope in fostering resilience, generosity, and endless possibilities for the future.
