Join the Declaration of Independence Book Club at Monticello for America's 250th Celebration

Celebrate America's Founding Ideals with the Declaration of Independence Book Club

As the United States braces for its 250th birthday, a new initiative aims to rekindle the spirit of unity and reflection around the nation’s foundational document. Monticello and More Perfect proudly announce the launch of the Declaration of Independence Book Club. This groundbreaking initiative invites citizens from all walks of life to come together and contemplate the principles embedded within the Declaration of Independence, especially in light of the upcoming anniversary in 2026.

A Year of Civic Engagement

Launched on July 4, 2025, the Book Club is designed to run throughout the year, culminating in various events leading up to America's 250th birthday. Participants can look forward to a series of three guided sessions that will delve into the Declaration’s transformative ideas and complicated legacy. Each session will focus on pivotal themes that address the document's relevance today, providing a reflective and educational experience.

Themes of Exploration

The sessions are thoughtfully organized around three significant themes:
1. 1776: Explore the historic year when the Declaration was adopted, marking the United States' independence from British rule.
2. 1826: Reflect on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration's signing, a poignant moment when both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson passed away on July 4—a fitting reminder of their contributions to American history.
3. Legacies: Investigate how the Declaration has influenced various social movements through American history, from the initial fight for independence to the civil rights efforts in Selma.

Resources for All

The Declaration of Independence Book Club Reader is accessible for free online, making it an excellent resource for book clubs, classrooms, religious communities, and civic organizations. The Reader contains a mix of short essays, historical timelines, discussion prompts, and video materials to help facilitate both in-person and virtual discussions.

Jane Kamensky, President of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello emphasizes the importance of this endeavor, stating, "The Declaration Book Club is one of the many exciting elements of our celebration of the nation's 250th birthday in 2026. We believe Americans are eager to rediscover, discuss, and celebrate the Declaration's impact. Its global influence and enduring relevance resonate powerfully today."

This initiative is part of a broader movement aimed at engaging Americans in meaningful conversations about shared values that transcend individual differences, and creating a sense of communal understanding and respect.

A Living Promise

John Bridgeland, CEO of More Perfect, also remarks, "The Declaration is more than just a historical document; it embodies a living promise. This Book Club provides an opportunity for Americans across the nation to contemplate how we can uphold and advance that promise in our communities."

The Book Club will feature prominently in upcoming events, including a Constitution Day celebration on September 17, hosted by More Perfect and iCivics at American University.

Meanwhile, More Perfect is an alliance representing over 100 organizations dedicated to fostering civic learning and promoting democratic values across the United States. Together, they present a unified front to inspire future generations about the importance of the foundational values that underpin the United States.

In closing, let us embrace this opportunity as a chance to engage in profound discussions that honor our past while instilling hope for our future as a unified nation. Celebrate the Declaration's legacy, engage with your community, and contribute to the ongoing dialogue about democracy in America.
