How a Young Cancer Survivor's Creativity is Powering a Racing Initiative for Change

Bringing Color to Hope: Palmer Goforth's Dream

In a remarkable convergence of art and advocacy, 12-year-old Palmer Goforth has transformed his experience as a blood cancer survivor into a powerful symbol of hope and resilience. While undergoing treatment, Palmer found solace in drawing—turning his hospital room into a canvas for creativity. This artistic outlet not only helped him express himself but also served as a beacon of hope for his fellow patients.

Now, thanks to a collaboration between Valvoline Global Operations, Blood Cancer United, and Hendrick Motorsports, Palmer’s artwork has made the impressive leap from sketchbook to the racetrack. His design will be featured on the No. 24 Valvoline Chevrolet driven by William Byron during the NASCAR race in October at Charlotte Motor Speedway, creating a unique blend of sports, art, and philanthropy.

“I am so excited that everyone will see my car racing. It’s unbelievable to know that my artwork will inspire others,” Palmer exclaimed. With a design infused with vibrant Miami vibes and a message urging everyone to “stay strong,” Palmer hopes to motivate not just patients like himself, but anyone facing challenges in life.

Brittany Goforth, his mother, reflected on this exceptional opportunity, saying, “This is something Palmer could have only dreamed of—connecting his love for sports and art while also helping others.” Every brush stroke in his design represents the courage and tenacity Palmer exhibited during his battle with cancer.

This initiative is well-timed, coinciding with both Blood Cancer Awareness Month and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, amplifying the message that awareness drives action. As such, this project, dubbed the “Driving for a Dream,” aims to not only raise awareness but also funds to support Blood Cancer United's Dare to Dream Project, a groundbreaking $175 million initiative dedicated to enhancing the treatment and care for children suffering from blood cancer.

Valvoline has pledged a commitment of $1 million over five years, a decision that Michael Kirtman, Chief Brand Officer at Valvoline Global, described as a heartfelt mission. “Seeing Palmer’s resilience infuse meaning into our purpose is incredibly inspiring. This synergy with Blood Cancer United and Hendrick Motorsports allows us to make a tangible impact,” Kirtman noted. This partnership brings forth not only a visual spectacle in the form of a race car but a commitment to accelerate research, enable clinical trials, and provide invaluable family assistance programs for those affected by blood cancer.

As William Byron gears up for the race, he emphasizes the deeper significance behind the car. “This race car is a representation of Palmer and every child's dream. I want fans to recognize that behind the speed and adrenaline, there is a powerful story that needs to be shared,” Byron remarked. He hopes that their initiative will not only foster excitement during the race but also inspire fans to engage with the cause and support children and families battling this disease.

Moreover, fans can partake in their own journey of support by entering a competition that allows donors to win an exclusive racing experience and other exciting prizes, including signed memorabilia. Every contribution made through the Driving for a Dream initiative directly supports the resources and advocacy efforts essential for advancing the fight against blood cancer.

Additionally, this unique race car will be showcased publicly during the upcoming Cars and Coffee event on September 19, providing an opportunity for fans to get an up-close look while raising awareness in the community.

In a bittersweet reflection, Palmer acknowledges, “Though I wouldn’t choose this path, the journey has opened many doors. Being part of such a meaningful project feels right. If my story helps just one child, then I’m beyond grateful.”

As the painting comes to life on the racetrack, it serves as a powerful reminder: hope, creativity, and community can drive meaningful change. And as we watch the vibrant colors race towards the finish line, we are reminded that behind every dream lies the potential to impact the lives of many.
