Experience Japanese History at Honkan
The narrative company, known for its commitment to traditional Japanese architecture and culture, has launched an exclusive overnight stay plan at the historic
Honkan in Bunkyo, Tokyo. Recognized as a registered cultural property,
Honkan offers guests a unique opportunity to experience the rich history and craftsmanship of a traditional wooden ryokan, originally established in 1898. This special plan is a chance for visitors to immerse themselves in the ambiance of a bygone era before the structure undergoes necessary renovations.
The Setting
Honkan, a two-story wooden building, is more than just a place to stay; it is a slice of Japanese history. Surviving significant events like the Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo Air Raids, it has been a beloved lodging spot, particularly as a guesthouse, in the Bunkyo area. With its intricate architectural details and preserved aesthetics, it remains a crucial part of Tokyo’s cultural landscape.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Honkan shifted its focus primarily to day-use reservations. However, this limited stay plan aims to provide a rare chance for guests to stay overnight in its current form. Visitors canstep away from modern conveniences and experience an evening filled with tranquility, away from the digital chaos of daily life.
The Exclusive Stay Plan
The overnight stay is available for a limited selection of dates in November 2025: the 14th, 15th, 21st, 22nd, 28th, and 29th. Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed at check-in, which runs from 3 PM to 5 PM. Following check-in, a guided tour of
Honkan led by the ryokan’s charismatic owner will take place around 5:15 PM. This tour provides an in-depth look at the building's history, architecture, and unique features.
Guests will enjoy freedom in the traditional ryokan space after the tour, allowing them to explore and appreciate the serene atmosphere at their leisure. The following morning, an original breakfast menu inspired by the themes of Japanese intellectuals and the dawn of modernization will be served exclusively for those staying under this offer.
