Exploring the Rise of Living with Parents: A Study by LIFULL HOME'S

The Growing Trend of Living at Home in Japan

Recent research conducted by LIFULL HOME'S highlights an intriguing trend in Japan, especially among adults in their 30s and 40s. With rising living costs and soaring rent prices in urban areas, many young adults are opting to continue living with their parents rather than moving out on their own. This shift has raised important questions about the financial and social implications of extended family living arrangements.

Study Overview

LIFULL, a real estate and housing information service based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, conducted a survey covering various demographic aspects of living arrangements. The survey, which involved 4,943 employed individuals aged 20 to 49 residing in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba, was carried out between April 25 and May 7, 2025.

Key Findings

1. Prevalence of Living at Home:
The results show that 37.7% of individuals in their 20s still live with their parents, surpassing those who live alone. Even among those in their 30s and 40s, approximately 30% report living at home.

2. Intent to Move Out:
When asked about their future living intentions, the data reveals a notable decline in the desire to move out as age increases. Over half of individuals in their 20s (55.7%) expressed plans to eventually leave their family home, while only 47.5% of those in their 30s and a mere 29.7% of those in their 40s share similar sentiments.

3. Reasons for Staying:
Financial concerns dominate the motivations for remaining in the parental home. The primary reason cited by participants across all age groups was the desire to save money. Nearly 48.6% of those in their 20s indicated saving as a key factor, while 36.8% of those in their 40s expressed that they cannot afford the costs associated with independent living.

Additionally, a considerable number of respondents mentioned familial obligations, such as caring for aging parents, highlighting a deeper emotional connection to their living situation. There is a strong sense of responsibility that influences decisions to remain at home.

4. Commute Challenges:
The survey also examined commuting patterns for those who have moved out of their family homes in recent years. On average, individuals who have moved out over the last five years reported a commuting time of 55.8 minutes to reach their workplaces, emphasizing the considerable distances that can complicate living arrangements. Furthermore, around 36% of respondents who still live at home reported commutes exceeding 60 minutes, suggesting that the logistical challenges of commuting do not deter many from choosing to stay.

Final Thoughts

The LIFULL HOME'S survey reveals compelling insights into the contemporary living dynamics in Japan. As financial pressures continue to mount, the choice to live with parents appears to be driven by more than just convenience; it reflects broader societal shifts around family, responsibility, and the economic landscape. This trend merits further exploration as it reshapes the narrative of young adulthood in Japan.
