On November 28, 2025, Okayama University celebrated a significant event by awarding honorary professorships to Professor Tadao Masuyama and Associate Professor Keiichiro Nakamura from Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam. This ceremony took place during a university collaboration initiative that has fostered continual exchange and academic cooperation since both institutions first established a partnership in 2010. Initially starting with a departmental agreement in dentistry, the collaboration was elevated to a university-level agreement in 2015, reflecting a deepening relationship between the two academic entities.
In the last decade, both universities have seen a considerable exchange of students and faculty, which underscores the strong bond and commitment to shared academic goals. Previous recipients of honorary professorships from Okayama University include notable figures such as Professor Takuo Kuboki from the field of implant rehabilitation and Professor Toshitaka Ohashi from molecular medical chemistry. This trend highlights the university's ongoing recognition of excellence in research and academic mentorship.
The honorary degree conferral ceremony included a variety of events such as a site visit to the obstetrics department of Hai Phong University, where several academic exchanges including lectures and case discussions took place on the morning of November 28th. In the afternoon, an official ceremony was held where Professor Masuyama delivered a speech in English, expressing gratitude for the honorary titles granted to him and Professor Nakamura.
As a part of Japan’s Ministry of Education initiative, Okayama University has been selected for the special program aimed at prioritizing government-sponsored foreign students; this recognition marks the third consecutive year of selection. Throughout this program, a total of 24 international students have been accepted over the last six years, indicating the university’s dedication to international education.
Additionally, Associate Professor Ohashi has also been included in a similar prioritized program, contributing to the overall acceptance of five government-sponsored foreign students annually in the medical field. Among these students, two have come specifically from the obstetrics department of Hai Phong University, showing the practical nature of this partnership. Graduate students specializing in molecular medicine, orthopedic science, and pediatric medical science have also thrived in Okayama University’s academic environment.
The first graduate student from this collaboration has already earned a doctorate in medicine, publishing numerous papers in English over a three-year period, which illustrates the high level of research output and academic performance. Currently, several talented graduate students are continuing their studies, reflecting the quality of clinical guidance provided at Okayama University, which has been greatly appreciated by Hai Phong University.
