Unifi Aviation, a major player in aviation services, has launched an innovative autonomous wheelchair service in collaboration with WHILL, Inc. and the Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA). This groundbreaking pilot program, specifically designed for Delta Air Lines customers, aims to greatly improve accessibility, streamline operations, and enhance the overall passenger experience at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).

The decision to implement this advanced service is part of a broader initiative supported by a grant from the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification, an arm of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). This program aligns with Michigan's ambitious economic strategy termed "Make it in Michigan," which focuses on advancing mobility solutions within the state. By integrating such technologies, Michigan aims to set a benchmark in electrification and accessible transport solutions.

WHILL’s autonomous wheelchairs are engineered to accommodate passengers who can stand and independently transfer to and from the chairs. These smart wheelchairs feature pre-mapped routes, collision-avoidance technology, and an emergency stop mechanism, offering a safe and efficient mode of mobility. For travelers requiring additional assistance, traditional wheelchair services will continue to be available.

Gautam Thakkar, the CEO of Unifi, expressed enthusiasm about the new service, stating, “We are continuously exploring new innovations to enhance the customer experience. This pilot marks a significant step in exploring how smart technology can adapt to a variety of mobility needs.” By allowing teams to focus on passengers needing hands-on assistance, the autonomous wheelchairs grant greater independence to many travelers.

Eligible passengers wishing to use the autonomous wheelchairs can request one during check-in. After clearing security, they will transfer to the autonomous chair at a designated area. Once settled, the wheelchair will autonomously navigate to the passenger's gate. Upon arrival at the gate, passengers will seamlessly transfer to standard seating before boarding. After disembarkation, the wheelchair autonomously returns to its docking station, optimizing efficiency and reducing wait times for airport personnel.

Detroit Metro Airport joins the ranks of prominent facilities like Los Angeles International (LAX), Miami International (MIA), and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) in adopting this forward-thinking technology, showcasing a growing trend in the aviation industry towards enhanced accessibility.

Chad Newton, CEO of the Wayne County Airport Authority, commented on the initiative, highlighting its significance: “The introduction of WHILL autonomous wheelchairs is a major step forward in improving accessibility at DTW. This collaboration with Unifi allows us to offer a cutting-edge, efficient service for customers, ensuring a smoother and more inclusive airport experience.”

As Unifi evaluates this pilot's effectiveness in enhancing service efficiency and passenger satisfaction for Delta customers at DTW, the organization anticipates considerable benefits during period of peak travel, reducing personnel strain while simultaneously elevating service quality.
