In an extensive investigation into sleep quality across the globe, IKEA has released its largest sleep report yet, surveying over 55,000 individuals from 57 different markets. Surprisingly, the findings indicate that Mainland China boasts the highest sleep quality among the surveyed populations, while Norway and the USA are at the bottom of the rankings.

This report emphasizes a significant global sleep gap, revealing that many people around the world are missing out on an average of 1 hour and 20 minutes of sleep each night. Over the course of a year, this lack of sleep accumulates to a staggering 20 full days of lost rest.

The Rankings: Who Sleeps Best?


Mainland China tops the charts with residents averaging over 7 hours of sleep per night. In stark contrast, Americans report the most disrupted sleep patterns. Data indicates that 64% of people in Egypt consider their sleep to be good, which is the highest rate globally. Factors contributing to poor sleep include financial stress, excessive screen time, and inconsistent sleeping routines.

Belén Frau, the Global Communication and Positioning Manager at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), emphasized the critical role of sleep in enhancing life quality. She stated, "Sleep is an important factor for life quality. At IKEA, we're committed to understanding people's sleep challenges and providing solutions—whether through smart bedroom designs, better sleep environments, or simple daily habits."

What Causes Sleep Disturbances?


The survey identified several primary factors causing sleep disturbances:
  • - Stress and Overthinking (40%): This was reported as the main disruptor affecting individuals' sleep.
  • - Use of Phones in Bed (72%): The trend is especially prevalent in younger individuals aged 18-24, with 86% admitting to this habit.
  • - Dependence on Medication (19%): Notably, 5% of the participants reported using sleep medication daily.

Addressing Sleep Inequality


The IKEA Sleep Report sheds light on serious inequalities surrounding sleep quality across different demographics. Individuals from financially unstable backgrounds, the LGBTQ+ community, and women with young children consistently scored below the global average.
