Tamori's New Book on Tokyo's Slopes: A Deep Dive into Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Meguro

Celebrating Tokyo's Slopes: The Launch of 'Saka Tamori' Vol. 2

The publication of the second volume in the 'Saka Tamori' series, authored and photographed by the beloved Japanese entertainer Tamori, is finally upon us! Released on April 22, 2026, this edition dives deep into the slopes of Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Meguro. As a testament to Tamori's love for Tokyo’s hilly terrain, this book serves as a comprehensive collection of 108 slopes he meticulously captured over three and a half years.

The excitement continues as the Nihon Sakamichi Gakkai (Japan Slope Association), with its president Katsu Yamano at the helm, unveiled their inaugural ranking of renowned slopes in these neighborhoods. This list is thoughtfully curated based on traditional conditions established by the association, reflecting its dedication to preserving and celebrating Tokyo's unique slope culture.

The Ranking Criteria of Nihon Sakamichi Gakkai

According to the Japan Slope Association, four main criteria are emphasized in defining a slope's merit:
1. Steepness - The incline must be significant.
2. Curvature - A winding shape adds to its charm.
3. Historical Resonance - It should embody elements of Edo's cultural legacy.
4. Named Heritage - The slope’s name should possess historical significance.

When these four elements harmonize, they create slopes that Tokyo can proudly showcase as cultural treasures. As stated by President Yamano, “The slopes we’ve ranked together with Tamori reflect the essence of Tokyo’s heritage. We invite you to explore them through this publication.”
