The Launch of Organic Beets from Yokomakura Farm for Online Shopping
On July 4, 2023, Yokomakura Farm, run by the nonprofit organization Karatsu FARM & FOOD in Saga Prefecture, Japan, officially began selling their organically grown beets online. These beets, cultivated in an environmentally recognized natural coexistence site, are available for purchase through their online shop at
karatsuff.shop.
The Unique Appeal of Karatsu Beets
Beets, a root vegetable known for its distinctive red-purple hue, are distinguished by the presence of betacyanin, a pigment that also offers antioxidant properties. Although these vibrant vegetables are not yet well-known in Japan, they hold a steadfast place in European and American cuisines. In Ukraine, beets are a fundamental ingredient in borscht, a traditional soup that is beloved by many.
Whether in salads, marinades, smoothies, or soups, beets boast high nutritional value that appeals to health-conscious individuals. The cultivation of these beets is carried out without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, utilizing only natural compost provided by local pig and chicken farms.
A Commitment to Sustainable Farming
Yokomakura Farm has been designated as a “Natural Coexistence Site” by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, recognizing their dedication to biodiversity and sustainable farming practices. By using locally sourced compost and foregoing harmful chemicals, they ensure that the beets are grown in a manner that respects both the environment and the community.
The story behind these beets is deeply rooted in a sustainable approach to agriculture, emphasizing a harmonious relationship with nature and community resources. Recently, Ukrainian communities have also engaged with Yokomakura Farm, linking the farm’s produce with culinary traditions.
Connection through Culture
In December 2022, a Christmas charity event in Karatsu City, supported by the Ukrainian Embassy in Japan, featured borscht prepared with Yokomakura Farm’s beets, drawing over 300 attendees. The event was not only a culinary showcase but also a bridge connecting cultures, as attendees experienced the flavors of Ukraine brought to life by these local ingredients. Among the recipes shared during this event were the “Ultimate Borscht with Saga Beef and Karatsu Beets” and a summer beet salad known as “Vinaigrette,” developed with Ukrainian university students. These recipes are available on the Karatsu FARM & FOOD website.
