Dr. Ray Vandiver to Lead Saint Louis Science Center as New President and CEO
Dr. Ray Vandiver Takes the Helm at Saint Louis Science Center
The Saint Louis Science Center has recently announced a significant leadership change as Dr. Ray Vandiver steps in as the new President and CEO. This move comes as the Center prepares to navigate future challenges and opportunities under a new strategic vision. Dr. Vandiver will officially take over the role on February 28, 2025, succeeding long-time CEO Todd Bastean, who is retiring after an impactful tenure of over five years.
Who is Dr. Ray Vandiver?
With an impressive career spanning more than three decades, Dr. Vandiver possesses a wealth of experience in managing science centers and museums. Before joining the Saint Louis Science Center, he served as the founding Executive Director of the Discovery Lab in Tulsa, OK for over 12 years. His previous roles include Vice President at the Center for Learning Experience at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and executive director at the Bootheel Youth Museum in Malden, MO.
Dr. Vandiver is particularly excited about this new chapter as it allows him to return to his roots—he was born and raised in St. Louis and holds a B.A. in physics from Saint Louis University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. His connection to the city is profound; not only has he studied in local institutions, but he also credits his childhood experiences in St. Louis for shaping both his personal and professional life.
Vision for the Future
As he steps into this influential role, Dr. Vandiver will be at the helm of a team comprising nearly 160 members, who are committed to advancing the Science Center’s mission: “to inspire everyone to be curious and engaged in science.” The organization has made headway as a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate since 2016, known for its interactive exhibits and educational outreach programs. Dr. Vandiver intends to harness this platform to further promote curiosity and engagement in the STEM fields among visitors of all ages.
In his remarks, he stated, "Leading the Saint Louis Science Center is particularly meaningful to me, as it allows me to return to my hometown—a city that shaped both my personal and professional life. I am elated to lead this prized educational institution that inspires everyone to be curious and engaged in science."
The End of an Era
The transition in leadership marks the end of Todd Bastean’s tenure, who has been instrumental in guiding the Saint Louis Science Center through various initiatives over the past five years. Bastean has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Center and the community, stating, "I am honored to have served the Saint Louis Science Center and the community in these last five years, and I know Ray will be a great leader for the team."
Looking Forward
As Dr. Vandiver prepares to take charge, the Science Center looks forward to a future filled with innovation, engagement, and a renewed commitment to education in science. The board of commissioners and the community remain optimistic about Vandiver’s leadership and the growth of the Center.
