Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Enhances Arita Recycling Plaza
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co. (MHIEC), headed by President Yoshihiro Noguchi and based in Yokohama, has announced the successful completion of a significant equipment upgrade at the Arita Recycling Plaza in Saga Prefecture. This facility, crucial in the region for waste recycling, has undergone comprehensive improvements aimed at boosting operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Originally completed in March 1999, the Arita Recycling Plaza has been designed and constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and plays an integral role in the local community. The facility processes non-combustible and bulky waste as well as recyclable materials such as empty cans, bottles, and PET bottles, boasting a processing capacity of 12 tons every five hours.
The recent upgrades to the facility come after two decades of service, during which time critical components like conveyor systems, sorting equipment, and electrical systems had experienced depreciation. By modernizing these key machinery and technologies, MHIEC aims to ensure long-term stable operations and significantly increase energy efficiency, resulting in a CO₂ emission reduction of over 4%.
In conjunction with these improvements, a new processing facility for trimming branches and grass clippings has been established. This facility is set to efficiently process organic waste brought in from the local area, repurposing it into valuable compost and bedding for livestock. With a processing capacity of 1.2 tons every five hours, this innovative approach not only minimizes waste but also contributes to sustainable agricultural practices. The processed materials will be stored in the receiving yard before being shredded and ground, then distributed to local residents as compost or used as bedding for farmers in the Arita region.
MHIEC represents a continuation of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' extensive expertise in environmental equipment development. Since taking over the know-how related to the construction and operation of waste processing facilities in 2008, the company has been able to leverage its wealth of experience and knowledge to provide comprehensive solutions from construction to operation, tailored to meet contemporary environmental challenges.
As MHIEC looks to the future, the company is committed to enhancing the longevity of existing waste facilities and pursuing measures to combat climate change. They aim to actively promote initiatives focused on reducing life cycle costs associated with maintenance and operational management, thereby contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society. The combination of advanced technology, environmental consciousness, and dedication to sustainable practices positions MHIEC as a leader in modern waste management solutions.
