FamilyMart's Summer Time Initiative for 2025
Starting from July 16, 2025, to September 15, 2025, FamilyMart, a prominent convenience store chain in Japan, will implement its fourth annual 'Summer Time' initiative. Under the leadership of CEO Kensuke Hosomi, this program aims to promote efficient working practices and reduce energy consumption. The decision to carry on with this initiative follows last year's positive outcomes that demonstrated improved work efficiency among employees and reduced electricity usage.
Purpose of the Initiative
The 'Summer Time' initiative encourages employees to start their workday earlier during the cooler summer months when the daylight lasts longer. By beginning their tasks at 8:00 AM and concluding by 4:30 PM—earlier than the regular hours of 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM—employees are expected to work more efficiently, thereby creating ample opportunities to utilize their time effectively after work. Additionally, the initiative aims to curtail power consumption by shortening the hours of artificial lighting and other electricity use within the company’s offices.
Implementation Period
- - Start Date: July 16, 2025
- - End Date: September 15, 2025
Work Hours
- - Regular Work Hours: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM
- - During FamilyMart Summer Time: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Target Audience
Approximately 4,700 employees, including staff at the Tamachi headquarters and supervisors working nationwide, will participate in this initiative. However, employees working at store locations will not partake in this program.
Results from Last Year
The previous year’s implementation of 'Summer Time' yielded promising results:
1.
Changes in Awareness of Work Efficiency
Recent surveys showed that 25.7% of respondents noted a reduction in overtime hours, reflecting a 3.3-point increase compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, only 20.4% reported working additional hours, demonstrating a notable positive shift in work-life balance. Additionally, many employees expressed feelings of having more leisure time and reduced commuting stress.
2.
Impact on Energy Savings
Although the electricity usage at the headquarters saw a slight increase during last year's Summer Time period due to extreme heat, this increase was less significant when compared with periods outside the initiative. Specifically, outside air conditioning usage dropped to below 80% compared to the previous year, indicating heightened awareness and efforts toward energy conservation among employees.
FamilyMart's mission, rooted in the slogan 'With you, Convenient, FamilyMart,' emphasizes its commitment to community engagement and fostering familial bonds with customers. The 'Summer Time' initiative is just one example of FamilyMart's ongoing endeavors to create an indispensable presence in the lives of its customers and thrive as a responsible corporate citizen in Japan.
