BEAMS Launches 'Inspiration Room'
In an inspiring move to foster creativity and innovation among its staff, BEAMS Inc. has recently inaugurated the 'Inspiration Room' at its headquarters in Harajuku, Tokyo. This new initiative is part of the company’s robust archival efforts aimed at preserving its historical documents while inspiring new ideas and creativity among its employees.
Since its establishment in 1976, BEAMS has been at the forefront of the fashion and retail landscape, evolving from its first store 'American Life Shop BEAMS' in Harajuku to a conglomerate that encompasses various lifestyle concepts. In 2020, the company launched 'BEAMS ARCHIVES', a project dedicated to curating and digitizing its rich history. This undertaking included not only the safeguarding and exhibition of historical materials but also the release of a podcast series titled 'Kiku Culture Story by BEAMS ARCHIVES', showcasing the cultural heritage that BEAMS has cultivated over the decades.
The 'Inspiration Room' serves as a creative haven where employees can engage with vital historical documents, advertisements, and other archival items that reflect the evolution of BEAMS’ branding and ideology. The space is divided into three key areas: 1) An exhibit area that deepens understanding of the company's vision of 'Happy Life Solution Communities' through past advertising displays, 2) A curated section containing selected artifacts viewed through the lens of the company’s archivist, and 3) A library space filled with related literature on art, culture, and past publications that staff can freely explore during the designated hours.
This concept has been in the works since the inception of 'BEAMS ARCHIVES'. The presence of a dedicated archivist ensures accurate management and documentation of the company’s history, allowing for smoother integration into branding, marketing, and product planning initiatives. In total, BEAMS currently exhibits over 1,200 historical pieces to its employees, a testament to its commitment to maintaining a strong connection to its past while fueling future creativity.
The 'Inspiration Room' measures approximately six tatami mats (about 10.5 square meters) and is exclusively available to BEAMS Group staff. Equipped with around 860 archival items, the room has been meticulously designed to allow staff to examine materials and gain insights into BEAMS' unique legacy and its transformative journey.
Mieko Nagatomo, the dedicated archivist at BEAMS, emphasizes the importance of understanding the vision of the company’s founder and how it has shaped BEAMS’ distinctive values over the years. The intention behind establishing this room was not only to look back at the past but also to encourage dialogue and spark new ideas and discussions through various planned interactions, such as talk sessions, turning it into a dynamic laboratory for future creativity.
Mieko, who began her career at BEAMS as a graphic designer in 1988, has significantly evolved within the company to eventually lead the branding direction. Her vision includes transforming 'BEAMS ARCHIVES' into an entity that translates historical significance into contemporary brand value.
As BEAMS approaches its 50th anniversary in February 2026, the launch of the 'Inspiration Room' underscores its dedication to preserving its legacy while continuously pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation in the retail sector. With approximately 165 stores throughout Japan and Asia, BEAMS remains a pioneer in presenting a diverse array of products and a vibrant community culture that resonates across generations.
