BAIC FOTON's 'Drive to Great' Conference Showcases Localization Strategy for Africa

On October 29, 2026, the BAIC FOTON Africa Partners Conference took place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The conference attracted nearly 700 attendees, including prominent political and business figures from both China and Africa, senior executives from BAIC Group and BAIC FOTON, as well as key distributors and media representatives from 42 African nations. This gathering, themed 'Drive to Great,’ served as a platform to discuss the company’s strategic localization initiatives and the importance of collaboration across the entire value chain in Africa.

BAIC FOTON has consistently led the commercial vehicle market in China, maintaining the top spot in sales for 21 consecutive years and in exports for 15 years, reaching over 140 countries and regions. In the first nine months of 2026 alone, the company achieved export sales exceeding 168,500 units, marking a remarkable year-on-year increase of 43.6%. In Africa, BAIC FOTON’s influence spans 54 markets and includes more than 300 authorized service outlets, showcasing its commitment to the continent.

During the conference, Chang Rui, CEO of BAIC Group and Chairman of the Board of BAIC FOTON, alongside various customer representatives, officiated the delivery of 1,000 heavy trucks in Ghana and 800 in Zambia. Additionally, Wu Zongtian, President of BAIC FOTON International, signed contracts for new energy projects that include 200 vehicles in Mozambique, 100 in Ethiopia, and 100 in Kenya, with further initiatives planned in Zambia. These projects are articulated around environmentally friendly solutions tailored for the mining and agricultural sectors.

A key focus was on enhancing BAIC FOTON's international presence and regional strategies in Africa. The company aims to bolster its product lineup through three primary pillars: a localized product portfolio, an extensive local business ecosystem, and optimized manufacturing operations in the region. To achieve this, BAIC FOTON is committed to employing diverse energy strategies, including fuel, natural gas, battery electric, and plug-in hybrid technologies, with South Africa playing a pivotal role in activating the Southern African market while also targeting coordinated breakthroughs in East, North, and West Africa.

As part of the product expansion initiatives, the conference saw the official launch of two new heavy trucks, the GALAXUS R5 and GALAXUS C5, along with the TUNLAND V PHEV pickup tailored for Africa’s heavy-duty logistics and multipurpose mobility needs. BAIC FOTON’s manufacturing strategy relies on 16 local factories throughout Africa, thereby fostering ongoing cooperation in local production efforts. In a notable highlight, Dai Hongkai, Party Secretary of BAIC FOTON International, completed six localized manufacturing cooperation agreements with partners in Tanzania, Kenya, and Zimbabwe.

A vital aspect of the conference was the emphasis on deepening market reach through promotional activities. The partners had the opportunity to celebrate achievements at the award ceremony, recognizing exemplary partners in various categories such as key account development, new energy advocacy, and aftersales services. Luo Yunjie, VP of BAIC FOTON International, introduced the Africa segment of the FOTON GALAXUS Global Experience, awarding flags to distributor representatives from Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

In conclusion, the BAIC FOTON Africa Partners Conference showcased the company’s determination to elevate its manufacturing and operational capabilities within Africa, enhancing collaboration with local partners to solidify its market position and forge ahead on the journey dubbed 'Drive to Great.' With these initiatives, BAIC FOTON aims to not only strengthen its presence but also contribute significantly to the sustainable development of the automotive industry across the African continent.
