Opening a New Avenue for Employment
Works Barrier Free, a group company of DYM, known for its diverse business spanning personnel services, online ventures, and international medical services, is set to launch a groundbreaking new initiative. On November 17, a satellite office focusing on coffee roasting for people with disabilities will open its doors in Katsushika, Tokyo. This office will not only provide job opportunities but also strive to create a supportive work environment tailored to the unique needs of employees.
The Reality of Disability Employment
Currently, the legal employment rate for individuals with disabilities in private sectors is set at 2.5% for companies with 40 or more full-time employees, rising to 2.7% for companies with a workforce of 37.5 or more beginning on July 1, 2026. According to a report from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, published in December 2024, only 46% of qualified companies reached this employment rate, a noticeable decrease of 4.1 percentage points from the previous year. It highlights the tangible challenges both for employers needing to adapt their workflow and for employees managing their health and working conditions.
As more companies turn to satellite offices for disability employment, Works Barrier Free has already established four locations focusing on administrative roles. The newly opening office aims to utilize the unique skills of individuals with disabilities in coffee roasting, a field that provides a tangible product and a sense of accomplishment in the workplace.

Business Operations
At this new office, individuals with disabilities will engage in various parts of the coffee manufacturing process, from selection to processing and packaging. By allowing staff to take on defined roles based on their capabilities, Works Barrier Free aims to foster a sustainable work environment with ongoing support from both on-site staff and specialists.
The emphasis on coffee roasting as a form of employment is intentional; its segmented processes allow for precise role allocations tailored to individual strengths. Moreover, the finished products are not only operationally utilized within the company but also shared externally, providing workers with a direct perception of their contributions.
Through this model, the organization hopes to improve the employment stability of individuals with disabilities, increasing social value while fulfilling corporate social responsibility (CSR) and enhancing branding opportunities.
Message from Management
Tatsuya Otani, responsible for this new initiative at Works Barrier Free, expresses a strong belief in the need for greater employment options that allow individuals with disabilities to contribute authentically. Creating an environment where everyone can thrive is a central goal for the organization. As coffee roasting allows for clear division of tasks and visible results, it serves as an ideal vehicle for instilling a sense of pride and achievement among employees.
“Our mission is to create reliable employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities that simultaneously contribute to elevating corporate social value,” says Otani.
