Innovative Decarbonization Model Receives Prestigious JATA Award

A groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting sustainability in travel has garnered significant recognition. The joint effort by five travel agencies, including Tobu Top Tours Co., Ltd., has been awarded the Excellence Award in the environmental category of the 4th JATA SDGs Awards. This accolade recognizes their innovative model for decarbonized school trips, which integrates a system that allows students to actively choose actions to reduce CO₂ emissions.

Participating agencies include JTB Corporation, T-LIFE Holdings Co., Ltd., Nippon Travel Agency Co., Ltd., and Meitetsu Kanko Service Co., Ltd. Together, they developed a program that leverages visibility tools to calculate and display the CO₂ emissions associated with each travel itinerary. By comparing the differences in emissions based on their choice of transportation and accommodation, students are empowered to make environmentally friendly decisions.

The initiative is particularly timely, coinciding with the upcoming Expo 2025 in Osaka/Kansai, under a solicitation project designed to educate students through experience. The program further compiles eco-actions taken during trips into a point system linked to an app, along with pre-trip and post-trip educational activities and local programs. This innovative approach not only enhances students' understanding of environmental issues but also allows them to reap the cultural benefits of the Osaka region.

To date, the initiative has been implemented in 210 schools, totaling 27,062 participants in school trips and educational travels. This effort has successfully reduced CO₂ emissions by an impressive 1,033,816 kg-CO₂eq (approximately 25%) compared to traditional school trip models. With all sites involved in the initiative, the collective contribution towards lowering emissions showcases the massive potential impact of responsible travel practices in the educational sector.

The JATA SDGs Award evaluation highlighted the model's unique ability to visualize carbon emissions within the vast market of school trips, emphasizing the interactive aspect whereby students are encouraged to choose actions that contribute to emission reductions. The combination of learning while having fun reinforces environmental awareness among the next generation, a critical factor that contributed significantly to this esteemed recognition.

As the travel landscape continues to evolve, the companies involved in this project are eager to extend these successful practices beyond school trips to encompass corporate training programs and general group travel. The aim is to not only lead efforts in emissions reduction within the tourism sector but to foster a broader cultural shift towards decarbonization across the industry, contributing to the realization of a sustainable society for future generations.

The award is not just a recognition of past achievements but a motivating force for continued innovation and commitment in the journey towards a net-zero future. With these initiatives, the potential to influence other regions and markets is promising, as sustainable travel practices become an essential element in redefining the tourism narrative.
