Aquatech Selected as Key Technology Partner
Aquatech has recently been designated as the technology partner for the construction of Texas' first major seawater desalination plant located at the Inner Harbor Water Treatment Campus in Corpus Christi. This facility is projected to be the third-largest seawater desalination plant in the Americas when it becomes operational, thereby playing an essential role in supplying potable water in a region that faces significant water scarcity challenges.
A Commitment to Water Security
The desalination plant will add an impressive capacity to produce 30 million gallons (approximately 113 million liters) of drinking water daily. This initiative forms a crucial component of Corpus Christi's strategy to ensure a long-term, drought-resistant water source for the Coastal Bend area. The plant's construction is anticipated to begin in early 2026, with a target completion date set for 2028.
Energy Efficiency at Its Core
One of the standout features of the desalination plant is its promise to be among the most energy-efficient of its kind in the world. Aquatech aims to deliver high-quality drinking water with minimal energy consumption, showcasing cutting-edge techniques that mitigate issues such as biofouling and reduce chemical usage. As highlighted by Ravi Chidambaran, the CTO and President of Aquatech, this project isn't just a business venture; it's a point of pride for the company due to its commitment to sustainability and high operational standards.
Collaborating for Success
The City of Corpus Christi has engaged Kiewit as the prime contractor for the project, while GHD will provide essential process design services. The collaboration between Aquatech and these firms underscores a robust partnership aimed at navigating the complexities of such a large-scale water treatment project.
A Legacy of Innovation
Founded in 1981 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Aquatech has built a reputation as a leader in advanced water technologies. The company currently employs hundreds across the U.S. and has been instrumental in executing numerous intricate water projects for Texas' industrial sector. In 2025, Aquatech expanded its presence with the launch of a new project development and engineering hub in Houston, indicating its strategic growth in the region.
Aquatech has successfully implemented seawater desalination projects that achieved notable energy efficiency in several parts of the world, including Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia. This new endeavor in Texas signifies another milestone in Aquatech's gradual expansion and commitment to addressing global water challenges.
Addressing Regional Water Needs
The Corpus Christi Inner Harbor Water Treatment Campus will serve a dual purpose, delivering high-quality drinking water that caters to both residential and industrial needs. The facility will utilize highly advanced reverse osmosis technology to treat seawater sourced from the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, ensuring that residents and businesses alike will benefit from a consistent and reliable water supply.
With the increasing pressures of climate change and population growth, initiatives such as this are becoming vital. Investments in technology like this desalination plant can provide effective solutions to long-standing water supply issues and contribute to a sustainable future.
As Aquatech continues to leverage its expertise in water treatment and technology, stakeholders in Texas and beyond are optimistic about the long-term implications of this groundbreaking project, which is poised to be a beacon of innovation in water management.
