Innovative Hydrogen Pipeline Technology Development in Tokyo Bay Area

Innovative Hydrogen Pipeline Technology Development in Tokyo Bay Area

The Tokyo Port Authority is taking significant strides in leading decarbonization initiatives in the Tokyo Bay Area. In line with the "Tokyo Bay Area Carbon Neutral Strategy," this ambitious effort involves collaborative research on a groundbreaking hydrogen pipeline technology. This initiative is a joint endeavor between the Tokyo Port Authority, NTT Anode Energy Corporation, and NTT Advanced Technology Corporation. Their goal is to establish a hydrogen network that can supply odorless hydrogen to multiple consumption points utilizing existing joint conduits in the region, all while ensuring safety through advanced leak detection methods.

This research is being conducted with funding from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), under their program aimed at developing competitive hydrogen supply chains.

Implementation Details

The project will be focusing on the following key areas of research and development related to the safety and operational effectiveness of the novel hydrogen pipeline technology:
1. Safety Verification of Hydrogen Pipeline Operations: This includes assessing the operational safety and performance validation of hydrogen pipelines.
2. Safety Evaluation of Hydrogen Pipeline Technology: Comprehensive studies will be conducted to evaluate the safety parameters of the hydrogen pipeline technology.
3. Performance Assessment of Pipeline Materials: Research will also delve into evaluating the materials used for constructing hydrogen pipelines.
4. Information Dissemination and Collaboration: The initiative will emphasize sharing information related to hydrogen pipeline technology and facilitate collaboration with municipal projects.

The end goal of this research and development effort is to work towards commercializing hydrogen transport through existing infrastructure, aiming for approval from the Ministry for specific exemptions regarding gas business regulations.

Primary Location of the Project

The project will mainly be carried out in the Aomi area of Koto City, Tokyo, at the designated site within the Tokyo Bay Area. Certain validation activities will also occur within Tokyo Port Authority-managed premises.

Project Timeline

The project is anticipated to span from the fiscal year 2025 to 2027. Here’s a breakdown of the project's timeline and future plans:
  • - FY 2025: Initial research and assessment of hydrogen pipeline materials, along with validation in simulated facility environments.
  • - FY 2026-2027: Safety evaluation studies concerning real-field hydrogen pipelines in joint conduits, alongside performance assessments.
  • - FY 2027: Collection and compilation of collected data from the project.

Future Directions

In the coming years, the project aims to refine the capabilities and safety measures associated with hydrogen transportation using existing infrastructure. Advantages of using odorless hydrogen include direct utilization in fuel cells and reduction of costs related to deodorization measures. This innovative approach not only promotes maintenance simplicity but also contributes to lowering hydrogen prices significantly.

As the project progresses, it represents a critical step toward establishing a reliable and safe hydrogen supply network in urban areas, highlighting the importance of collaboration among public entities and private technology leaders.

The Tokyo Port Authority's proactive stance in embracing avant-garde hydrogen pipeline technologies sets a precedent for future energy solutions and showcases the potential of sustainable development in urban environments.
