The BMW×Toyota H2 Days Event: A Step Towards a Hydrogen Society
On October 4th and 5th, 2025, Toyota Motor Corporation and BMW co-hosted the "BMW×TOYOTA H2 DAYS" event aimed at promoting a rich lifestyle powered by hydrogen, focusing on Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs). For over a decade, these two automotive giants have shared a commitment to environmental technology and sustainable practices. The purpose of this event was to spread awareness about hydrogen energy and its significance in achieving a hydrogen society, emphasizing its accessibility.
Event Overview: "Double the Excitement"
Under the theme "Double the Excitement," the event explored the diverse values and lifestyles of consumers while aiming to realize a hydrogen society. Attendees were given opportunities to deepen their understanding of both companies' efforts in FCEV and hydrogen energy technologies. A special talk show featuring development leaders from both brands highlighted the future of hydrogen society and FCEVs. Additionally, guests had the rare chance to take special test drives in FCEVs from both companies.
One of the highlights was a visit to the "TOKYO H2 HUB," a hydrogen station that facilitated explanations on hydrogen refueling. Participants were also introduced to Toyota's hydrogen initiatives and had the opportunity to sample hydrogen-roasted coffee, making them aware of both the current state of FCEV technology and hydrogen energy. Various engaging activities, such as special menus prepared using hydrogen grills, and a workshop featuring fuel cell mini-cars for families, provided insights into hydrogen energy, further enhancing the idea that, "Your daily life can be more interesting with hydrogen."
Special Talk Show: Insights from Experts
On the first day, a unique session featured Toyota and BMW’s development heads discussing their commitment to advancing FCEVs and the vision for a hydrogen energy society achievable through their collaboration. Chief Engineer Ryotaro Kiyosui of Toyota spoke passionately about the importance of working on hydrogen energy as part of the effort to achieve carbon neutrality. He explained the societal significance of developing fuel cells that utilize hydrogen for power generation and how FCEVs are being integrated into municipal services like emergency vehicles, garbage trucks, and taxis, showcasing practical applications.
Peter Lennart from BMW shared updates on their test vehicle, the "BMW iX5 Hydrogen," which has been undergoing testing internationally. Notably, he revealed that BMW plans to start production of its first mass-produced FCEV model, the BMW iX5, in 2028. The discussion emphasized the future vision shaped by their collaboration, aiming to accelerate FCEV technology development and offer more attractive products to consumers. Kiyosui also expressed enthusiasm for the distinct characteristics of the Crown (FCEV) and the experimental BMW iX5 Hydrogen, highlighting the mutual benefits of sharing technology between the two brands.
Participants engaged actively by asking questions about future body types and vehicle designs to be introduced in FCEVs, creating an atmosphere filled with interest and anticipation for what lies ahead in the FCEV realm. After the talk show, attendees were seen interacting with vehicles and Toyota's hydrogen grills, exemplifying the excitement and potential of a hydrogen society.
Family Workshop: Learning about Fuel Cell Mini-Cars
On the second day, a workshop designed for families allowed children to learn about hydrogen and fuel cells while building their own miniature hydrogen-powered cars. The engaging session not only captivated the children's curiosity about carbon neutrality and the ins and outs of FCEVs but also provided them with the thrill of watching their creations run. Interaction with actual FCEV display vehicles also enriched the experience, marking a memorable occasion where attendees, particularly the young ones, could feel the potential of next-generation clean energy technologies.
Overall, the BMW×TOYOTA H2 DAYS event was a significant step in familiarizing the public with hydrogen energy and showcasing how it can dramatically enhance our daily lives.
