Reviving an Artistic Legacy: The Comeback of Takayoshi Sakabe in Ginza
Beginning January 13, 2026, Nakajima Art in Ginza, Tokyo, will reignite the artistic flame of renowned painter Takayoshi Sakabe with his exhibition titled "Sakabe Takayoshi: Departure". This much-anticipated event marks nearly 30 years since his last solo exhibition at the same venue, signifying a powerful homecoming for the artist, who has made waves in the international art scene.
Takayoshi Sakabe, originally from Shizuoka, Japan, made his mark as a painter of life, spirit, and tranquility. His journey began when he emigrated to France, where he honed his craft and developed a unique perspective influenced by his experiences abroad. The connection with Nakajima Art was established when its representative introduced Sakabe to a broader audience during his temporary return to Japan. This collaboration became a pioneering platform that introduced Sakabe's artistry to his homeland, ultimately leading to his first solo exhibition at Seibu Yurakucho department store, solidifying his reputation in Japan.
For this upcoming exhibition, Sakabe will present a collection of his works depicting his evolution as an artist. He describes the pieces in the exhibition as creations born from a process of overcoming struggles and allowing himself to be genuinely expressive. The collection features both previous works and new pieces that reflect Sakabe's deep connection to Japanese artistic traditions, drawing inspiration from influential figures like Heian-period painter Fujiwara no Takamitsu and the renowned Hasegawa Tohaku.
Interestingly, the exhibition will not just be a visual feast. Audiences can expect a unique experience with live Butoh dance performances by Sakabe himself, scheduled to take place on January 13 and 26, 2026. This fusion of visual art and performance art promises to add a dynamic layer to the experience, highlighting Sakabe's multifaceted talents.
In total, the exhibition will showcase around 36 artworks, with a rotating display that allows visitors to view different pieces throughout the exhibition period. The event underscores Nakajima Art's commitment to showcasing significant cultural exchanges and the artistic dialogue between Japan and the global art community.
In his earlier years, at 30, Sakabe debuted at the Paris FIAC Art Fair, achieving a remarkable success with all his exhibited works sold. Yet, this success spiraled into a decade-long creative slump where he wrestled with the pressures of fame and identity. It was through a return to basics—working in the garden and reconnecting with nature—that he redefined his artistic voice, gradually transitioning to a Japanese aesthetic while still integrating his broader experience into his work.
Sakabe’s philosophy on art echoes the wisdom shared by fellow artists he admires: “No genius can ever exhaust the depth of the classics. Recognizing this profundity is the first step towards true genius.” His belief that classical music embodies the deep spirituality of our world is a reflection of his own artistic journey from mimicry towards authenticity.
The exhibition "Sakabe Takayoshi: Departure" will be held as follows:

First Period: January 13 – 22, 2026
-
Second Period: January 26 – February 4, 2026

Sakabe's return to Japan signifies not only a personal milestone but a celebration of a cross-cultural journey. As he brings his reflections back to his native land, audiences in Tokyo are invited to witness a remarkable artistic evolution, embodying both his love for Japan and his experiences abroad. This exhibition is a poignant reminder of the continuity in the dialogue between the past and present, illuminating the path he has carved over the decades.
