BorgWarner Expands Influence with Two Significant Dual-Clutch Programs in China
BorgWarner has made significant strides in the automotive landscape with the recent acquisition of two major dual-clutch transmission (DCT) programs in China. The company, known for its innovative drivetrain technologies, has established a prominent presence in this expanding market. This success is underscored by a newly signed contract with a well-regarded Chinese transmission manufacturer, coupled with a seven-year extension to an existing agreement with a German OEM also operating in China.
Isabelle McKenzie, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of Drivetrain and Morse Systems, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, "Our success in securing new projects in the Chinese market underscores BorgWarner's commitment to delivering innovative solutions in the region." This partnership not only enhances BorgWarner's product leadership but also exemplifies the company's dedication to aiding its clients in expanding their businesses within international markets.
The extended contract with the German OEM encompasses a DCT clutch assembly, reflecting a decade-long, fruitful collaboration highlighted by BorgWarner's extensive expertise in DCT technology. The company's facilities in Tianjin have been pivotal in this achievement, with the clutch assemblies designed to offer enhanced performance. This is particularly notable as these assemblies feature lower rotational inertia, thus minimizing friction losses and leakage—factors that significantly enhance transmission efficiency. In addition, customers can expect a smoother driving experience due to the reduced drag torque.
Furthermore, the newly secured DCT project aims at the production of clutch modules for a leading Chinese OEM's SUVs and sedans. This module boasts various advantages, such as compactness, superior thermal robustness, and outstanding cost-effectiveness. The Taicang facility will be responsible for producing these units, further showcasing BorgWarner's extensive manufacturing capabilities in China. The thermal robustness aspect aligns with the growing need for vehicles that can perform well under diverse conditions, including driving on steep hills and during rapid acceleration from a standstill.
As mass production of these clutch modules is expected to begin by the end of 2025, BorgWarner continues to prioritize innovation in dual-clutch technology. Their commitment to delivering effective and advanced solutions will not only benefit their customers but will also contribute positively to the automotive industry at large.
With a legacy spanning over 130 years, BorgWarner remains a transformative leader in mobility solutions, dedicated to promoting sustainability and advancing technology to provide a cleaner and safer future. Their endeavors in China represent just a fraction of their commitment to innovation and excellence within the automotive realm, positioning them well for the challenges and changes ahead in the global automotive industry.
