Event to Showcase Construction Industry to Students in Miyazaki, Japan

ATOMica to Host Event Showcasing the Construction Industry

ATOMica, a social co-working startup based in Miyazaki, is set to host an engaging event titled "Creating the Future of Our Town with IT" on November 11, 2025. This event is in collaboration with the Miyazaki Prefecture Infrastructure DX Consortium, composed of 37 construction companies in the region. The core objective is to convey the allure and societal importance of the construction industry to local students.

During this event, attendees will learn about the various facets of construction work and be introduced to the latest examples of digital transformation (DX) within the industry. Students will also engage in workshops where they can conceptualize what they believe an ideal town should look like, thus personally experiencing the significance and attraction of working in construction. The event aims to create new connections between students and the industry to cultivate future talent that can support the region.

Background of the Event

The construction sector plays a pivotal role in sustaining local living standards and infrastructure; however, there has been a significant decline in the number of younger workers in the field. According to data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the number of individuals employed in construction has decreased from 6.85 million in 1990 to just 4.82 million in 2021. The proportion of workers aged 55 and older rose from 21% to 35.5% over the same period, while the share of workers aged 29 and below dropped notably from 17% to 12% as of 2021. This data indicates the ongoing challenge of an aging workforce accompanied by a growing disconnect from younger generations.

The rapid advancement of digital technologies has evolved the construction landscape dramatically, introducing solutions like Building Information Modeling (BIM), Construction Information Modeling (CIM), and drone surveying, which enhance efficiency and safety on construction sites. Nevertheless, addressing the shortage of young talent to support these transformations continues to be a pressing issue.

Recognizing this challenge, ATOMica and the Miyazaki Prefecture Infrastructure DX Consortium have combined efforts to organize this event. It is designed to communicate the fundamental significance of the construction industry as one that collaboratively builds towns alongside local communities. By allowing students to directly converse with industry professionals, the event aims to immerse them in the realities of the sector and instill a sense of social significance and excitement about potential careers in construction. This is part of a broader effort to foster interest in the field and better prepare students to contribute to the industry in the future.

Details of the Event "Creating the Future of Our Town with IT"

The event will kick off with a mini-talk illustrating the connections between construction and daily life through real-life examples of urban development projects. This will be followed by workshops in which students can design their vision for the city of the future. Their reflections will be captured, and a consortium representative will later provide feedback based on criteria related to civil engineering.
