Katten Law Firm Celebrates Excellence in Mentorship with Annual Awards Ceremony

Katten Names Three Recipients for Mentoring Excellence

On November 24, 2025, Katten, a leading law firm, proudly announced its recognition of three distinguished individuals with the 2025 John P. Sieger Excellence in Mentoring Awards. The recipients are General Counsel Michael I. Verde, Associate Alexander C. Kim, and Conference and Event Services Supervisor Jessica Berger, all of whom are based in the firm's New York office. These awards, established in 2022, honor the legacy of John P. Sieger, a partner who was deeply committed to mentoring and developing the next generation of attorneys.

“Mentoring is at the heart of our identity as a firm,” stated Gil Soffer, Katten Chair. “It plays a crucial role in our culture and is essential for the professional growth of both our attorneys and business professionals.” The awards were presented following a thorough review by internal selection committees that evaluated the recipients' mentorship impact and their unwavering dedication to fostering and inspiring others within the firm.

Mike Verde, a partner since 1999 and currently serving as General Counsel, has been a pillar of leadership at Katten. In an emotional acceptance speech, he highlighted the firm’s culture of respect and support that he attributes to Sieger's influence. “Katten is a unique place,” Verde expressed. “I was brought up in this firm with the understanding that we treat each other with respect and help one another.” His warm demeanor and principled approach are qualities that have endeared him to his colleagues, making him a respected mentor.

Alexander Kim, who joined Katten over four years ago as part of the Financial Markets and Regulation practice, has quickly become a leading figure in advising major digital asset trading platforms and blockchain tech firms. Beyond his client-focused work, Kim contributes to thought leadership in the industry and serves as co-chair of the firm’s Asian American Pacific Islander Affinity Group. “Mentoring, for me, is about consistent support, showing up for others behind the scenes,” Kim shared during the ceremony, showing his commitment to uplifting those around him.

Jessica Berger, who is relatively new to the firm, having joined in 2023, has made an undeniable impact as the first point of contact for new hires. Responsible for coordinating client events and meetings, Berger embodies empathy and fosters an inclusive environment for all. One of her colleagues remarked on her mentoring style, saying, “Jessie mentors without ego, always making herself approachable and encouraging.” Berger expressed her gratitude in light of Sieger's legacy, underscoring the importance of recognizing all the ways we can support each other in a professional setting.

Nearly 50 nominations from Katten’s attorneys and business professionals were submitted for this year’s awards, highlighting the firm’s strong commitment to mentorship. Noah Heller, Katten’s CEO, emphasized that true mentoring extends beyond formal settings; it reflects everyday interactions and support. “There’s no greater joy than witnessing someone you believe in, succeed and exceed your own expectations. That’s part of what makes Katten such a special place to work.”
