In a bid to support strawberry farmers during the off-season, Red Horse Corporation, situated in Sumida City, Tokyo, has taken steps to enhance the revenue of strawberry producers in Ogori City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Starting April 2024, the company will assist with Ogori City’s hometown tax donation programs. As part of their efforts in developing return gifts, they have created three sweet products using the famous "Amaou" strawberries from Shiraki Strawberry farm, which have been registered as part of Ogori's hometown tax return gifts on June 9.
Shiraki Strawberry's products, including fresh strawberries during the peak season and frozen strawberries off-season, have now been innovatively transformed into desserts that can be marketed year-round. This initiative is not only aimed at enhancing the local economy through hometown tax donations but also anticipates improved revenue streams for strawberry farmers during the slower months.
The idea for these return gifts originated from discussions with Shiraki Strawberry, who expressed a need to stabilize their income throughout the year, as most sales occur during the strawberry season from December to April. During off-season, producing a steady income proved to be a challenge, leading to the innovative suggestion to utilize frozen strawberries that could be processed into various dessert products.
To bring these sweet creations to life, Red Horse Corporation collaborated with Strawberry Fields, a well-known dessert shop located in the Nishijin area of Fukuoka City. Strawberry Fields specializes in gelato cakes and has gained significant acclaim for their distinctive offerings. Together, they developed three delectable strawberry-based desserts: a Strawberry Gelato Cake, a chiffon cake, and a mini tart.
The gelato cake, designed in a cat shape, aims to attract cat lovers, incorporating a playful aesthetic that has seen many iterations to perfect its appearance. Guided by the expertise of artisans who appreciate cats, the team committed to fine-tuning this product until they achieved a design that delights both cat enthusiasts and dessert lovers alike. All three desserts harmoniously blend the sweet and tart flavor of Amaou strawberries with layers of cookie and tart crust, making them enticing to those with a sweet tooth.
These fresh treats were officially registered on various hometown tax donation platforms, including Rakuten and Furusato Choi, starting June 9, allowing participants to make their donations and enjoy the exquisite flavors of the region. The listed return gifts and their respective minimum donation amounts include:
1. Amaou Strawberry Cat Gelato Cake: ¥12,000
2. Amaou Strawberry Chiffon Cake: ¥9,000
3. Amaou Strawberry Mini Tart (4 pieces): ¥8,000
The Amaou strawberries used for these desserts are not only exclusive to Ogori City; they are marked as a common return gift across Fukuoka Prefecture. Hence, there are plans to register these products with other municipalities in the prefecture for their hometown tax initiatives as well. Furthermore, during the strawberry-picking season at the Shiraki Strawberry farm, the chiffon cake and mini tart will also be made available for sale, alongside additional distributions at Strawberry Fields. The Red Horse Corporation aims to leverage these strategies to create additional revenue opportunities for farmers during the off-season and contribute to a sustainable local economy.
Through innovative ideas like this initiative to support off-season strawberry farmers, Red Horse Corporation is committed to establishing systems that allow communities to thrive independently. Their vision is centered around realizing a self-sustaining model for regional revitalization, ensuring that local industries can not only survive but flourish in all seasons.
