Field to Market and Cornell Team Up to Cultivate Sustainable Agriculture Finance Leaders

Launching Future Leaders in Sustainable Agriculture Finance

The Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture and the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability announced an innovative program aimed at nurturing the next generation of leaders in sustainable agriculture finance. This initiative, known as the Resilient Futures Leadership Program, is set to launch early in 2026, specifically designed for individuals working in finance, agriculture, and sustainability sectors.

Objectives of the Program

The six-month program aims to train up to 30 early to mid-career professionals. Participants will gain hands-on experience and a comprehensive understanding of regenerative practices, the agricultural value chain, sustainability indicators, policy signals, and innovative financial mechanisms. This unique approach enables participants to join discussions with prominent figures from finance, agriculture, technology, and academic fields.

Carrie Vollmer-Sanders, President of Field to Market, remarked, "Farmers are increasingly conscious of the long-term benefits of conservation practices. However, they often struggle to see these rewards reflected in their financial statements. This program aims to arm leaders with the tools to connect financial incentives with sustainable practices, benefiting both the environment and farming communities."

Alan Martinez, the Lead of Climate and Nature Finance at Cornell Atkinson Center, emphasized the necessity of creating partnerships between research, business, and policy. He stated, "Through this program, we’re fostering leaders who can convert pioneering science into financial strategies, leading to systemic changes that enhance sustainable agriculture and its economic viability for farmers."

Program Structure

The program consists of three distinct learning modules, combining classroom training with field-based learning and expert-led sessions. Participants will explore various financial approaches, such as blended finance, sustainable finance, and risk-sharing strategies related to transitions. They will gain valuable insights into essential policy and market signals, as well as financial concepts like underwriting, assurance, and outcomes-based finance.

Furthermore, through direct engagement with industry leaders across diverse sectors—including finance, agriculture, technology, and conservation—participants will cultivate a robust perspective and develop a national network of colleagues spanning the agricultural value chain.

Application Process

Applications for the inaugural cohort of this groundbreaking program are now open, with a deadline set for December 5, 2025. Interested candidates can find additional information and access the application packet on the official website of Field to Market at Field to Market Resilient Futures Leadership Program.

By fostering sustainable practices and developing a new wave of financial leaders, Field to Market and the Cornell Atkinson Center are setting the stage for a future where agriculture thrives alongside environmental stewardship, ensuring a positive impact on farmers and ecosystems alike.
